Alone on the island, Kayode spoke into the wind: "Crooked stitches, strong cloth. My mother would laugh to see her proud son sewing like this. Black clouds are coming with anger. Tie everything down, Kayode. Tonight, the sea will shout again. I had gold, I had comfort, and I treated people like they were nothing."
Mama Bisi said, "Eat well, my dear, because this kitchen always knew whose table this truly was."
Folake said, "Your cooking carried this ship for years, and today we honor it properly together."
Tayo observed, "Every course tastes sweeter when nobody is shouting across this table."
Mama Bisi said, "Then eat slowly. This feast was made with love and not fear."
Later Folake and Tayo returned to the safe, this time with a ledger rather than the mood of a party. They counted the valuables, recorded them, and placed them back carefully. Folake did not want a single missing necklace or note to confuse the truth of what had happened aboard. Whatever else she had done, taking the guest's possessions was not the victory she wanted. Her father's photograph remained in the room, watching silently over a daughter who was still trying to decide which parts of his example she had honored.
Tayo replied, "Twelve gold watches, eight gold chains, and forty bundles counted twice."
Folake said softly, "Record every piece. Every coin waits here for its true owner."
Tayo observed, "There. Everything sleeps in its place again, waiting for its owner's return."
Tayo said, "And until that day, Folake, this suite here is only laughter—never his shouting at the walls."
One afternoon Kayode saw lights on the horizon and thought that rescue had finally come. He gathered what strength remained and tried to make himself visible from the shore. For a few breathless minutes, hope lifted him beyond exhaustion. When the vessel continued past, that hope fell so hard he could barely stand. The island seemed larger than ever, its silence now an accusation he could not escape.
Alone on the island, Kayode spoke into the wind: "Lights! Real ship lights out there! Run, Kayode, run! Light the pile before she passes by! See me, somebody! See this fire and know a living man is waiting on this island! Turn, please turn! Do not slide away like that!
She passed... She truly passed, and left my hope burning here until it turned to ash."
Folake said, "Look how the sun paints this whole deck gold for us this evening. And not one cloud of anger anywhere—only peace from bow to stern."
Tayo observed, "To the true heart of this ship, and to calmer seas ahead for everyone."
Folake said softly, "Thank you for standing by this ship."
Captain said, "The wind is rising tonight. The sea will test every ship out there."
Folake said, "Then we stay warm inside, and let the rain sing against these windows."
