"I treated you shamefully because I thought wealth proved intelligence. I thought success meant I could recognize genius. I thought I'd earned the right to judge people."

He gestured toward the tablet.

"You just proved I have blind spots the size of Manhattan."

The guest who had made the community-college joke stood, face red.

"Miss Brooks, I need to apologize. What I said was cruel and stupid. I was completely wrong."
