Then he walked out and slammed the door.

Fletcher remained alone in the conference room with the overturned chair at his feet and the smell of whiskey in the air. The body camera on his uniform had recorded Bradley's words, the finger against his chest, and the chair being shoved into him.

Day twenty-two became the breaking point.

It was 2:00 p.m. and ninety-one degrees outside. In the basement, the heat felt worse because the air-conditioning system had been broken for three straight weeks. Multiple work orders had been filed and ignored.

Fletcher was hauling trash bags up the service stairwell when he heard a heavy thud on the landing above him. He ran and found Earl, a sixty-two-year-old Black janitor who had worked in the building for fifteen years, collapsed on the second-floor landing.

Earl's uniform was soaked with sweat. His skin was dangerously hot. Fletcher dropped to his knees.

"Earl! Earl, can you hear me?"

Denise arrived and checked his pulse. It was fast and weak.

"Call medical," Fletcher said. "Now."

Denise radioed the front desk. Three minutes later, Craig Ellsworth arrived with a clipboard. No paramedic. No nurse.

Craig looked down at Earl. "He's dehydrated. Give him water. He'll be fine."

"He needs an ambulance," Fletcher said. "He's burning up. His pulse is weak. This could be heatstroke."

Craig stepped closer. "You want to keep your job? Shut your mouth. We're not calling an ambulance because a guy forgot to drink water. You know how much paperwork that is? How that looks for the building?"

Fletcher stared at him, then pulled out his personal phone and called 911.

Craig's face changed instantly. "What the hell are you doing? Hang up. Hang up right now."

Fletcher gave the dispatcher the address. "Pinnacle Tower, service stairwell, second-floor landing. Sixty-two-year-old male, possible heatstroke. He's unresponsive."

Paramedics arrived nine minutes later. They confirmed severe heat exhaustion bordering on heatstroke and transported Earl for emergency treatment. Craig stood in the hallway while the stretcher rolled away, fists clenched and silent.

Fletcher watched the ambulance leave through the glass lobby doors. Then he stepped into the stairwell and called Raymond Cole.

Raymond answered on the first ring.

"Ray," Fletcher said. "It's time."

Day twenty-five was Fletcher's final morning as Fletch.

He entered through the same gray service door wearing the same oversized uniform and plastic name tag. The lobby, however, was transformed. Workers hung Pinnacle Industries banners from the mezzanine. A podium stood near reception. Audio technicians tested microphones. The marble floor had been polished twice.

Whispers moved through the building: the CEO was coming. The real CEO. Most people in the tower had never met him.

Fletcher grabbed his mop and worked the lobby as though it were any other morning.

At 8:15 a.m., Bradley Thornton came out of the elevator looking like a man who had not slept. His shirt was wrinkled beneath his blazer, his hair freshly gelled, and his hands unsteady as he barked orders about tables, chairs, and flowers.

Then he saw Fletcher.

Bradley crossed the lobby quickly and stopped in front of him. "What are you doing here? I told the crew no janitors on the main floor today. None. Zero. You understand me?"

"I was assigned to the lobby this morning, sir."

"I don't care what you were assigned."

Bradley grabbed Fletcher's mop and threw it onto the marble. The handle clattered loudly enough to turn heads across the lobby.

"The CEO of this company is walking through those doors in less than an hour. You think I'm going to let him see you smelling like bleach and floor wax? Looking like that?"

He grabbed Fletcher by the shoulder and shoved him toward the service elevator. Fletcher stumbled back two steps but stayed on his feet.

"Get downstairs now. Take your bucket, take your stink, and disappear. I don't want a single one of you people visible when the boss gets here. Not one."

Craig Ellsworth appeared from behind the security desk, grinning. "You heard the man. Move it, janitor. Back to the basement where you belong."

Fletcher looked at Bradley, then Craig, then the service elevator. He pressed the call button. The doors opened with a soft chime.

He did not step inside.

The doors closed again.

Fletcher turned slowly, placed his bucket against the wall, straightened his uniform, and walked toward the center of the lobby.

Bradley's face twisted. "Hey. I just told you to get downstairs. Are you deaf? Are you stupid? Get out of my lobby before I have you dragged out."

Fletcher stopped directly in front of the podium, feet planted and hands at his sides.

Before Bradley could say another word, the front doors opened.

Raymond Cole entered first in a dark suit and silver tie, carrying a briefcase. Behind him came four attorneys, three Pinnacle Industries board members, and two uniformed police officers. They crossed the lobby in a straight line toward Fletcher.

Bradley froze.

Raymond reached Fletcher, opened his briefcase, and removed a navy suit jacket made of custom-tailored Italian wool. He held it open.

Fletcher unclipped the plastic name tag from his chest and looked at it for a moment.

Fletch.

He set it gently on the podium. Then he removed the gray janitorial shirt. Beneath it was a crisp white dress shirt. He slipped on the navy jacket and adjusted the cuffs.

Raymond turned to the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce Fletcher Davis, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Pinnacle Industries."
