Corrupt Cops Bullied A Quiet Old Man — Then 50 Men In Black Arrived To Protect Him
She had her mother's eyes, not the color, the intelligence behind them. The way they landed on you and didn't let go, she Aliyia said, "Eat your eggs." You said she. Aliyah, I'm just saying you said she. That's all I'm saying.
She went back to her eggs with an expression of complete innocence that fooled nobody. Malcolm drank his coffee and said nothing else about it. He dropped her at school at 7:14, watched her run through the gate with her backpack bouncing, waved when she turned around to wave at him. She always turned around every single morning and he never moved the car until she did. And then he drove to work with the radio off.
He needed to think. The problem was that he didn't know what there was to think about. Nothing had happened last night. Not in any conventional sense. A woman had shown him a room she'd kept locked for 6 years.
They'd talked, they'd had coffee, she'd told him to come to HR on Monday. That was it. That was the whole thing. So why did it feel like something? He parked in the lower level garage, took the elevator up to the fourth floor, and started his morning the same way he started every morning, checking the overnight system logs, walking the floor, making sure everything that was supposed to run had run the way it was supposed to run.
At 9:17, his workphone buzzed. A text from Preston. Miss Whitmore would like to know if you have a moment this morning. Her words were, "And I am quoting exactly because I was afraid to paraphrase. Not urgent, not about work, just if he has a moment.
I have no further context. I am as confused as you are, possibly more confused. Please advise." Malcolm stared at the message for a long moment. He typed back, "Tell her, I'll be up at 10:00."
Preston replied with three separate messages in quick succession. Okay. And then she smiled when I told her. And then I have never seen her smile before 11:00 a. m. This is unprecedented.
I'm documenting it. Malcolm put his phone away. At 10:00, he took the elevator to the executive floor for the second time in his 3 years with the company. The first time had been for his initial onboarding orientation. He hadn't been back since.
The executive floor was different from the rest of the building. The way first class is different from coach, same aircraft, completely different experience. The carpet was thicker. The light was quieter. The people who worked up here moved with a specific kind of self-possession that came from proximity to power.
Preston met him at the elevator. Preston was 26 years old and approximately 6 ft of pure anxiety in a well-fitted suit. And right now he was looking at Malcolm. The way a man looks at someone who has access to information he desperately wants. She's in her office.
Preston said, "She told me and again exact quote to let you in without announcing you." He paused. She has never said that about anyone in 2 years, including the board chairman. Thanks, Preston. Is there anything you can tell me?
Have a good morning, Preston. He knocked twice on Elena Whitmore's office door and opened it before anyone answered because that was what he'd been told to do. And Malcolm was a man who followed instructions precisely. Elena was at her desk. She was in full armor today, dark suit, hair up, reading glasses on, a stack of reports in front of her.
She looked like the CEO she was. She looked like the woman who stroed through lobbies and made board members sweat. except that when she looked up and saw him, something shifted in her face. Small, fast, but there closed the door, she said. He did sit down. He sat in the chair across from her desk.
She took her reading glasses off and set them on the desk. Looked at him directly. No preamble. I want to apologize, she said. He waited.
Last night was, she paused, chose the word carefully. Unprofessional on my part. You came to deliver documents and I another pause. I put you in a position that was inappropriate given our professional relationship and I want you to know that I don't make a habit of that and it won't happen again. Malcolm looked at her.
She looked back. Okay, he said. That's it. Just okay. What do you want me to say?
I don't know. She picked up a pen, set it back down. The first uncertain gesture he'd seen from her in this building. I expected you to be more uncomfortable. Yes, I'm not uncomfortable.
Why not? He thought about it because nothing that happened last night was wrong. He said, "You showed me a room. You talked about your husband. I talked about my wife.
We had coffee. Nothing about that was inappropriate." A long pause. The other thing she said, he raised an eyebrow. The she actually looked slightly flustered.
Elena Whitmore, CEO of a billiondoll corporation, slightly flustered. The joke, the proposal. You mean when I said marry me and you said okay and grabbed my hand. I would like to address that directly. Okay.
I don't know why I did that. She said I want to be clear that I know it was a joke and I know that my response was interesting. Irrational was it? She stopped. He leaned forward slightly in the chair, elbows on his knees.
Because here's the thing, Elena, you're one of the most rational people I've ever met. I've watched you work for 3 years from the outside. Every decision you make has a reason. Every word you say has a purpose. He paused.
So maybe the more interesting question isn't why you did it. Maybe it's what the reason was. The silence in the room was very specific. The kind that has weight. That's a dangerous question.
She said probably he agreed. You work for me. I work for the company. You run the company. That's a distinction that might matter depending on how you look at it.
She stared at him. You've clearly thought about this. I've been up since 5:00. I had time. And just like that again, the same way it had happened last night in her kitchen, Elena Whitmore almost smiled.
