"Director, please," Miller tried again, wiping sweat from his brow with a trembling hand. "The county will fight this in court. You cannot simply walk in here and dismantle a precinct in a single afternoon."
"Captain," Roland replied, his voice never rising above a calm, level register. "I am not dismantling your precinct. Your officer already did that himself the moment he decided a Black man kneeling in his own garden was a criminal worth handcuffing. I am simply here to document it, and to make certain it never happens again under your watch, or the watch of whoever replaces you."
Miller opened his mouth to argue further, then closed it. There was nothing left to say.
Miller did not hesitate. He turned to the trembling officer. "Jenkins, badge and gun. Now."
"Captain, please!" Jenkins begged, tears welling in his eyes, his voice dropping into a pathetic whine. "I was just doing my job! He looked suspicious! You cannot let them do this to me!"
"You did this to yourself, Brad," Miller growled, stepping forward and stripping the pistol from Jenkins' holster, then ripping the silver shield from his chest with a single, sharp tug.
"You are a disgrace, Officer Jenkins," Deputy Director Croft said, stepping forward with a pair of federal handcuffs glinting under the fluorescent lights. "You are being placed under federal arrest for the violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 242: Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law. You have the right to remain silent, which I highly recommend you use."
Jenkins broke down sobbing as the federal agents spun him around and forced his wrists together behind his back. The sound of the handcuffs ratcheting closed was the exact same sound Roland had heard outside his own home hours earlier, kneeling in the dirt by his mailbox. Only this time, the justice was absolute, and it belonged to no one's prejudice but the law itself.
As Jenkins was marched out of the precinct, paraded past his stunned colleagues and shoved into the back of a black FBI Suburban, Roland turned his attention to the young rookie standing frozen near the door.
"Officer Gallagher," Roland said, walking slowly toward him.
