Third file: "Complaint three, 2022: a Black woman detained for a warrant that turned out to be a clerical error. Room B4. Same language: 'concealment risk.' Same clippers. Same missing camera."
He set all three files down in a row in front of the jury box. "Three women, four years, same room, same procedure, same words coming out of your mouth, same camera disappearing the same day." He turned to Dawson. "Officer Dawson, did you rehearse these encounters?"
Loomis shot up. "Objection! Inflammatory!"
Whitfield barely glanced at him. "Overruled."
Dawson didn't answer. Owens didn't push. The question was already doing its work inside the heads of twelve jurors.
Then Owens said, "The plaintiff calls Deputy Karen Sadler."
A ripple went through the gallery. At the defense table, Dawson's head turned sharply toward the door.
Sadler entered from a side hallway: late 20s, blonde hair pulled back. She was wearing civilian clothes, no uniform. Her hands were clasped in front of her, and even from a distance, you could see them shaking. She took the oath, sat down, and looked at no one except Owens.
"Deputy Sadler, were you present in Room B4 on the night of June 14th?"
"Yes."
"Did you witness Officer Dawson shave Ms. Hammond's head?"
"Yes."
"Did Ms. Hammond request a female officer?"
