she said.

“I’ve made drug-impaired arrests from hospital staff before.”

“That is not the question.”

“I know.”

He looked toward Maya through the glass vestibule.

“I thought the badge made it more possible.”

Denise nodded.

“And after that?”

“Everything fit.”

“Even when it didn’t.”

Tyler looked down.

“Yes.”

Denise folded her arms.

“You wrote the ending before you finished the interview.”

The sentence stayed.

Danielle arrived at 5:58 in pajama pants beneath a winter coat.

She entered the vestibule.

Saw Maya.

Hugged her.

Then noticed the police.

“What happened?”

Maya said:

“He thought I was on drugs.”

Danielle looked at Tyler.

Not Denise.

Tyler felt it.

“He tried to arrest me.”

Danielle’s face transformed.

“For what?”

Denise stepped closer.

“The arrest did not occur.”

Danielle turned.

“That wasn’t my question.”

Fair.

Denise explained briefly.

No excuses.

Danielle looked toward Maya.

“You drove this tired?”

“Yes.”

“Maya.”

“I know.”

“You could have called me from the hospital.”

“I know.”

“You could’ve slept there.”

“I know.”

Danielle’s anger arrived from a different direction.

Good.

Nobody in the story got to own all correctness.

Maya whispered:

“I thought I could make it.”

Danielle stared.

“How many times have you said that to patients?”

Maya looked away.

Exactly.

Denise said:

“Her car can remain here until later.”

The grocery manager had agreed.

Danielle nodded.

Then looked toward Tyler.

“Are you going to apologize?”

He froze.

Denise said nothing.

Maya looked at him.

Tyler stepped forward.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya’s face remained flat.

“For what?”

He understood immediately that a general apology would not survive.

“For deciding you were drug-impaired before I had enough information.”

“Yes.”

“For continuing to interpret everything that way after the alcohol test and after you explained why you stopped.”

“Yes.”

“For beginning an arrest I couldn’t support once my sergeant actually asked me to lay out the facts.”

Maya’s eyes filled.

Tyler continued.

“I’m sorry.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

Not:

I forgive you.

Not:

It’s fine.

Just acknowledgment.

Then Maya said:

“I was wrong too.”

Tyler looked surprised.

“I should not have left that hospital driving.”

Denise watched.

Maya continued.

“I was unsafe.”

“I recognized it too late.”
