"No."
"Did he tell you that leaving itself was a crime?"
"No."
"Did he say you had already done something illegal?"
"No."
Price closed her notebook for a moment. "So, your statement supports that he applied pressure, but it does not establish that he formally detained you."
Daniel looked frustrated. "That makes what he did sound harmless."
"I didn't say it was harmless. I said I need to describe it accurately."
Daniel leaned back. "Fair enough."
Price moved toward Eli. "You said earlier that Maya asked Brett to release her."
"Yes."
"How many times?"
"I couldn't give you an exact number."
"That's fine. More than once?"
"Yes."
"Could you hear everything they were saying?"
"Most of it."
"Were you close enough to see exactly where Brett's arm was positioned?"
Eli hesitated. "Not exactly."
Brett looked toward Price, but stayed quiet.
Eli continued, "I saw his arm around her upper body near her shoulder and neck."
"Did you see Maya strike him?"
"No."
"Kick him?"
"No."
"Try to get away?"
"Yes."
"Did you see Caleb touch Brett before Maya tried to get free?"
"No."
Price wrote it down.
Brett finally spoke. "Ask him whether he knows what a legal control hold looks like."
Price turned. "I don't need him to."
"He's describing something he doesn't understand."
"He's describing what he saw."
"That doesn't tell you whether my actions were lawful."
"No," Price said. "That comes later."
Brett folded his arms.
Eli looked uncomfortable. "I don't want to get anybody in trouble."
Price faced him again. "That isn't your job."
"I've known Brett around town for years."
"I understand."
"He's helped people."
"That may be true."
"And Maya hasn't told us everything."
"That may also be true."
Eli looked at her. "So, what am I supposed to believe?"
"Nothing yet. Tell me what you saw."
Eli nodded slowly.
