Caleb spoke from behind them. "Nobody remembers a room perfectly. That doesn't mean nobody remembers the truth."
Eli looked toward him; Price did, too. Then she walked to Caleb's booth.
"You're Mr. Ross."
"Caleb Ross."
"You said you touched Officer Kellen."
"Yes."
"Show me."
Without demonstrating on another person, Caleb raised his hands in front of his own body. "I controlled his wrist and elbow, changed the direction of his arm, and gave Maya enough room to move away."
"Did you intend to injure him?"
"No."
"Did you apply force after Maya was free?"
"No."
"Did he fall?"
"No."
"Did he complain of injury?"
"Not that I heard."
Price looked toward Brett. "Any injury?"
"No."
She turned back to Caleb. "Where did you learn that kind of control?"
"Military."
"What kind of service?"
Caleb paused. "Army. Combat arms part of the time. Medical..." He looked at her. "...part of the time."
Price studied him. "That why you were watching Maya's breathing?"
"Yes."
Brett spoke again. "He knew I was a police officer before he put his hands on me."
Price looked at Caleb. "Did you?"
"Yes."
Brett gave a brief nod. "There."
Caleb did not look at him.
Price asked, "Why did you intervene anyway?"
"Because she told him to release her."
"That alone?"
"No. She couldn't get free."
"Did you believe she was in immediate danger?"
"I believed the hold needed to stop."
Price wrote that down.
Brett stepped closer. "He doesn't get to decide when a police detention stops."
Caleb looked at him. "I didn't decide whether your detention was lawful."
"Then what did you decide?"
"That she had asked you to let go, she couldn't separate herself from you, and you weren't explaining why you were holding her."
Brett looked at Price. "That's a civilian substituting his judgment for an officer's."
Price answered, "It's also his statement. I'll decide later what weight it carries."
She moved next to Ruth. "You were behind the counter when Brett approached Maya?"
"Yes."
"Did Maya touch him first?"
"No."
"Did she threaten him?"
