Black Single Dad Took a Drunk Girl Home — Then His Boss Asked, “Where Did You Find Her?”
The massive wooden doors of the old barn were pushed open. They creaked loudly on their iron hinges. Hattie stepped out into the bright sunlight. She wore her grandfather's heavy leather apron.
"I do not have your money, Mr. Vance," Hattie called out. "But I have something better." Vance rolled his eyes.
"Child, I told you, I do not want your rusted toys." "Just look," Hattie said. She pulled the doors open completely. The bright noon sun flooded into the dark barn.
The light hit the massive iron sculpture. The crowd gasped. The iron mustang seemed to burst from the shadows. The overlapping horseshoes caught the sunlight, gleaming with a dark, heavy power.
The steel cables of the mane looked as though they were genuinely blowing in the wind. The beast was frozen in a moment of pure, wild fury. It was beautiful. It was terrifying.
It was a masterpiece. Vance stood frozen. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He stared at the towering metal creature.
For a moment, even his cold heart felt the sheer force of it. "Good heavens," the sheriff whispered, taking off his hat in respect. Gideon smiled, leaning heavily on his wooden crutch. Hiram the blacksmith wiped a tear from his eye.
Vance quickly recovered his composure. He gripped his cane tightly. His face turned a shade of angry red. "It is a parlor trick," Vance shouted, pointing his cane at the horse.
It is a pile of garbage. It has no value. I want my money or I am taking this ranch right now. I will buy it.
The voice cut through the yard like a rifle shot. Everyone turned. Arthur Pendleton urged his horse forward. The wealthy cattleman rode right up to the open barn doors.
He looked up at the towering iron mustang. Pendleton's eyes traced the powerful chest made of plow blades. He saw the hundreds of broken horseshoes his own men had provided. He saw the fierce, unbroken spirit of the West captured perfectly in cold iron.
He remembered his son. He remembered the wildness of this land. Pendleton took off his hat and looked down at Hattie. I told you I had no love for mustangs, Hattie, Pendleton said quietly.
I was wrong. This is the finest thing I have ever seen built in this valley. I want it standing in the center of town. I want every person who rides through our streets to see it.
Pendleton turned in his saddle. He looked directly at Amos Vance. Vance, the debt is $300, Pendleton said. He reached into his saddlebag.
He pulled out a thick leather pouch and tossed it onto the dirt right at Vance's feet. It landed with a heavy, muffled clink of gold coins. There is $500 in that pouch, Pendleton declared loudly. 300 pays off the deed to this ranch.
The deed belongs to Cora and Hattie, clear and free. The other 200 is for the artist, for the girl who built the horse. The yard went completely silent. $500 was a fortune. Vance stared at the pouch in the dirt.
His face twitched. He looked at the massive iron horse. He looked at the stern, unblinking faces of the townsfolk. He realized, in that moment, he had lost completely.
He could not bully a whole town. He could not break a girl made of iron. Vance bent down. He picked up the pouch.
He pulled the deed to the ranch from his coat pocket and handed it to the sheriff without saying a single word. Vance climbed into his buggy, whipped his horses, and drove away in a cloud of dust. The sheriff walked over to the porch. He handed the deed to Cora.
"It is yours, ma'am." The sheriff smiled warmly. "Forever." Cora held the paper to her chest.
She closed her eyes and a single tear of pure relief fell down her cheek. The crowd erupted. The ranchers cheered. Hiram clapped Gideon on the back so hard the old man nearly dropped his crutch.
Dr. Harland smiled broadly. Hattie stood near the great iron legs of her Mustang. Arthur Pendleton climbed down from his horse.
He walked over to the 14-year-old girl and extended his large, calloused hand. Hattie took off her heavy leather glove. She shook the cattleman's hand. Her grip was strong.
"Thank you, Mr. Pendleton." Hattie said, her voice finally breaking with emotion. "No, Hattie."
Pendleton said softly. "Thank you for reminding an old man how to see the beauty in broken things."
Spring had come to the valley painting the rolling hills in bright green. The bitter dust of the past was entirely gone. In the center of town, right outside the brick courthouse, a crowd of children played. They were running around the base of a towering, magnificent iron Mustang.
The statue had become famous. People traveling on the new railroad lines often stopped just to marvel at it. It stood as a silent, powerful guardian of the town. 10 miles outside of town, the old ranch was thriving.
The fences were mended. The cattle were fat and grazing peacefully. Cora sat on the porch in a new rocking chair knitting a bright red blanket watching the clouds drift across the blue sky. Behind the house, the old barn had a new coat of bright red paint.
Inside, the fire in the forge was burning hot and bright. The heavy clang, clang, clang of a hammer rang out into the warm afternoon air. Hattie was 15 now. She stood at the anvil wearing her grandfather's leather apron.
She was not striking iron out of fear or desperation anymore. She was striking it with joy. She picked up a small rusted hinge she had found on the road that morning. To anyone else, it was just a piece of useless scrap, but Hattie smiled.
She knew better. She held it to the fire ready to give it a second life.
