Officer Dana Mercer slammed both hands down on the reception desk and growled, "Pick up your things and leave right now."

Maya Williams stood perfectly still, her eyes fixed on the isolation doors behind the nurse's station. "My son is having an asthma attack back there. Tell me his condition."

Dana's expression hardened. But instead of answering, she shifted her weight and glanced toward the treatment corridor.

Maya pressed her again, asking whether Isaiah had been formally arrested. Yet Dana continued to avoid the one question that should have had a simple answer.

"He's connected to a case."

"What case?" Maya asked. "And is he under arrest?"

"I've already told you what you need to know."

"No, Officer Mercer. You've told me he's connected to something. You haven't told me whether he is legally being detained."

The muted television above the waiting area continued showing the evening news while several people nearby began paying closer attention to the confrontation. Maya ignored them. Her 20-year-old son was somewhere beyond those locked doors struggling to breathe, and every answer she received seemed designed to create more confusion rather than less.

As Dana opened her mouth to respond, Maya noticed the first irregularity: Dana raised one hand toward the body camera attached to her uniform. The movement was discreet enough to look accidental, but Maya saw her thumb press the control. A moment later, the small indicator light disappeared.

Maya did not mention it. She simply remembered exactly when it happened.

Then came the second irregularity: another officer passed behind Dana carrying Isaiah's gray backpack. Maya recognized it immediately. Instead of taking it toward the normal property processing area, the officer moved quickly through a side door marked *Staff Access Only*.

"Where is he taking my son's backpack?" Maya asked.

Dana barely looked behind her. "Property processing."

"Then where is the property receipt?"

Dana offered no answer.

Before Maya could press further, the staff door opened again and Lieutenant Charles Harland entered the lobby. He moved with the calm confidence of someone who already understood the situation, which immediately caught Maya's attention. He did not ask Dana what had happened. He first looked at Maya, then toward the door through which Isaiah's backpack had just disappeared.

That was the third irregularity.

Harland approached the desk and spoke in a controlled voice. "Miss Williams, this is security procedure."

Maya turned toward him. "Hospital procedure or police procedure?"

There was a brief hesitation before he replied. "Both sides are coordinating."

"Then let me speak with the doctor treating my son."

"That isn't possible at the moment."

"Why?"

"Security concerns."

Maya kept her voice level. "Who authorized those restrictions?"

Harland studied her more carefully now, as though he had begun to realize that she was not asking questions randomly.

Before he could answer, the isolation doors opened and a senior nurse stepped into the hallway. "Respiratory needs to see Williams again," she told another staff member. "His breathing is tightening."

Maya immediately stepped forward. "That's my son. I need to speak with his doctor."
