Dana's confidence began to fracture. "What order?"

"Badge, department phone, access card, and baton."

The words landed harder than anything Maya could have said. Dana stared at Ruiz, then looked toward Harland. "Lieutenant?"

Harland did not move to help her. "Follow the captain's order," he said.

Dana's face changed. For the first time that evening, she looked less angry than abandoned. Slowly, she removed the access card from her belt and placed it on the counter. Her department phone followed, then the baton.

The badge came last. Her fingers stayed on it for several seconds before she unfastened it from her uniform. "You're doing this in front of everyone?"

Ruiz answered, "You conducted the incident in front of everyone."

Dana placed the badge on the counter. Less than an hour earlier, Maya's medical records had been scattered across the same surface and the floor beneath it. Now, the metal badge sat alone beside the black leather credential wallet.

Maya did not touch it immediately. Paul opened a clear evidence envelope and handed her a pair of gloves. She put them on carefully, picked up Dana's badge, and placed it inside. Paul documented the transfer before Maya sealed the envelope.

Dana watched the entire process. "You came back for this?"

Maya looked at the sealed badge. "No."

Dana gave a bitter laugh. "Then what did you come back for?"

Maya lifted her eyes toward the isolation doors. "My son."

She handed the evidence envelope to Paul. Then she turned toward Karen Grant and Captain Ruiz.

"The unauthorized lockdown ends now. No officer restricts clinical access without documented legal and medical authority. Mr. Reeves will take control of evidence coordination until counsel establishes the proper chain."

Harland spoke from behind her. "You're making a serious mistake."

Maya turned only slightly. "Then the records will prove you right."

That answer silenced him.

The isolation doors stood only a few yards away now; somewhere beyond them, Isaiah was still waiting for someone to give him a straight answer. Maya picked up the medical folder that Dana had once knocked to the floor and held it against her side.

"Now take me to my son."

Karen Grant moved first. She spoke quietly into her phone, and within moments, the false security restrictions began disappearing from the hospital system: the red indicator above the treatment corridor changed; staff badges worked normally again; and the security guards who had been stationed at the emergency room doors were told to return to regular duty.

Inside Isaiah's room, Dr. Ethan Caldwell was already waiting for the police restriction to be lifted. He looked at the officer stationed beside the bed. "The hold has been suspended. Remove the restraints."

The officer hesitated. "I haven't heard that from Lieutenant Harland."

"You don't need to," Karen said as she entered behind Maya. "Hospital administration has confirmed there is no valid emergency security order supporting the restriction. Captain Ruiz has also directed that Mr. Williams be returned to normal clinical control."

The officer looked toward Ruiz; Ruiz gave him a short nod. "Take them off."

The handcuffs opened with two metallic clicks. Isaiah slowly brought his hands apart and rubbed his wrists—not because he was injured, but because he had been forced to keep them together for too long while struggling to breathe.

Evelyn Reed immediately moved the clear property bag closer to Dr. Caldwell. "His inhaler is here."

Caldwell checked the label before handing it to Isaiah. "Use it the way respiratory instructed you. Don't rush."

Isaiah took the inhaler with both hands and closed his eyes briefly after the first measured dose. His breathing was still labored, but the panic that had been tightening his chest was beginning to ease.
