Dailey set the card down on his side of the counter. He didn't slide it back. He didn't move to scan it. He leaned back in his chair and folded his arms."Look, friend, I've met the people who run the companies in this building. I see them come through here every single day. They come in with their assistants. They come in with their security details. They don't come in alone at 8:00 in the morning dressed like they're going for a jog."Raymond's expression did not change. "Scan the card, Officer Dailey.""I'm going to need you to step back from the window and call whoever your point of contact is inside the building to come down and verify your identity in person. That's procedure.""The card is the procedure." Raymond kept his voice level. "The biometric chip in that credential contains my fingerprint encoding, my federal facility clearance level, and my company registration. All you need to do is place it on the scanner. The system will confirm everything I've told you in under three seconds."Dailey smiled. It was not a kind smile. "Here's the thing about high-quality fakes: they look real until you look a little closer. The lamination on the edge of this card is lifting. Right here. See that?" He tapped the card against the glass. "I've seen guys try to walk into federal facilities with knock-offs bought online. Some of them are pretty convincing. This one's decent, but decent isn't good enough."The lobby of the Meridian Federal Complex was never entirely empty at 8:00 in the morning. Two men from the building's HVAC contractor team were waiting near the elevator bank. A young woman in a blazer was reviewing documents at a bench near the entrance. All three of them had stopped what they were doing.Raymond stood very still. He was, in his bones, a man who understood the geometry of dangerous situations: when to push, when to absorb, when to let a moment breathe. He had once spent six hours in a detention cell in a former Soviet republic waiting calmly for an extraction team because he understood that panic was the enemy of resolution."The lamination is not lifting," Raymond said quietly. "You are holding a valid federal facility clearance credential issued by the Meridian Complex Administrative Authority. If you place it on the scanner behind you, the light will turn green. Do that, Officer Dailey, and we can both move on with our mornings.""And if I think it's a counterfeit?" Dailey said, his chin lifting.
