Franklin wasn't sure about gospel. He was sure about sentences.
He also began, without announcing it, to write a short internal memo for his own team: How to Show Up in Partner Retail Spaces Without Performing Either Invisibility or Spectacle. It included practical lines — arrive with your badge if you have one; ask for the demo bay; do not outsource your belonging to an associate's first glance — and softer ones: If you are sorted, you may close a lid. You may also leave. You may also stay and do the work. All three can be dignity. Choose based on safety and purpose, not on what would look strongest in a retelling.
He did not publish the memo immediately. He let it sit in drafts like bread dough.
On day forty-five, Adrian forwarded a retail-social draft Brett's office had written, thanking "a valued partner" for "helping us grow." Franklin's name was not in it, but the fingerprints were obvious. Franklin replied all: Kill this draft. Growth language without specificity is how institutions congratulate themselves for not collapsing. If you must communicate, say: We documented an incident, trained staff, and are auditing floor language for ninety days. Anything softer is perfume.
The draft died. Brett sent a private message that began with "I respect your intensity" and ended with a request to "keep channels warm." Franklin did not reply to that one. Warmth was not a leash he wore.
Denise noticed his silence that evening and did not poke it. She put on a record and let the horns do the talking. Franklin washed dishes slowly, feeling the hot water argue with his knuckles, and thought about how many times in his career he had been asked to be grateful for basic recognition. Gratitude was fine. Compulsory gratitude was a cousin of the photo-op apology.
He went to bed early and dreamed, for once, of nothing he remembered.
On day thirty of the held-open complaint, Priya sent an audit summary: two floor interventions logged, one associate coached, training attendance complete, no repeat incident matching the pattern. Franklin replied: Noted. Continue.
On day sixty, Brett tried again to close early with a cheerful email about "shared learning journeys." Franklin forwarded it to Priya with a single line: Journeys are for hikers. Keep the file open.
On the morning of day eighty-nine, before he returned to the store, Franklin sat with Caleb in the half-finished bathroom and helped measure a vanity.
"You nervous?" Caleb asked.
"About a vanity?"
"About the kid. Closing the file."
Franklin penciled a mark on the wall. "Nervous isn't the word. Solemn, maybe. Closures make people think the story ended. Stories like this don't end. They change temperature."
Caleb nodded, tape measure whistling back into its shell. "Mom said you didn't make it a circus."
"Your mother is why I remember the difference between justice and entertainment."
"Yeah." Caleb hesitated. "When I was younger, I used to wish you'd roast people more. Make them small in public. I thought that was strength."
