Emma came into the kitchen halfway through.

She saw the keys.

Her face changed.

Daniel noticed.

“So he gets the car?”

Noah immediately let go.

Daniel looked toward Emma.

“Yes.”

“That’s it?”

“No.”

“What happens to him?”

Daniel took time.

“Things already happened.”

“He lost the car for two months.”

“He is in counseling.”

“He apologized.”

“He has restrictions.”

“He broke trust and has to rebuild it.”

Emma crossed her arms.

“And then he still gets everything.”

Noah flinched.

Daniel understood the sentence more than he wanted to.

“Come sit.”

“I don't want to.”

“Then stand.”

She stared.

He smiled slightly.

“Not punishment.”

That almost worked.

Emma stayed.

Daniel continued:

“If I take away every good thing Noah might ever have because he hurt you, does that restore your letters?”

“No.”

“Does it restore your summer?”

“No.”

“Does it make Desert Ridge more yours?”

She looked away.

“No.”

“Then what would permanently taking the car accomplish?”

“Punishment.”

“Yes.”

“What is punishment for?”

She shrugged.

“So people know things are bad.”

Daniel nodded.

“Partly.”

“And to change behavior.”

“And protect people.”

“And repair what can be repaired.”

Emma stared.

“You sound like Dr. Torres.”

“Unfortunately.”

She almost smiled.

Daniel continued:

“Noah is not getting the car because what he did stopped mattering.”

“He gets it because we need consequences that have an end when behavior changes.”

Emma looked toward her brother.

“What if he does it again?”

Noah answered before Daniel.

“Then Dad sells the car.”

Daniel frowned.

“I had not decided that.”

“Seems fair.”

Emma actually laughed.

That was the first time she laughed with Noah since September.

Nobody celebrated.

That would have frightened the moment away.

The Honda stayed.

So did the scar in family trust.

Both.

At Christmas, the first major test arrived.

Rebecca’s parents sent expensive gifts for Noah and Caleb.

New baseball glove.

Gaming headset.

Gift cards.

Grandma June sent Emma a telescope.

Huge box.

Noah saw it beneath the tree.

Old resentment flickered.

He noticed it.

That was new.

He told Dr. Torres.

“I hate that she got the biggest gift.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“Try.”

“Because it looks like more.”

“More what?”

He stared.

“Love.”

“Is Grandma June your grandmother?”

“No.”

“Does Rebecca’s mother send Emma the same gifts she sends you?”

“No.”

“Does that mean Rebecca’s mother hates Emma?”
