"You didn't need to try. You were scared. I was scared too."

Micah lifted his face. "You?"

Isaac nodded. "I was scared I'd make it worse. I was scared they'd end our visit. But the thing I wanted most was to get between you and that man."

Lena sat across from them, studying the father she loved and resented in equal measure. She had heard him speak about responsibility many times. This was different. He was refusing to pretend that courage meant feeling nothing.

"Can I still give you my picture?" Micah asked.

Isaac looked at the warped sleeve. The milk had blurred the figures, and one side of the little house was almost invisible. He held it beneath the light and turned it over. The six words on the back were still readable.

YOUR CHAIR IS STILL HERE, DAD.

Isaac covered his mouth with one hand. He had imagined that he might cry at his first meal with his son, but not like this, not over a wrinkled piece of paper and six words that made no demands. He looked toward Lena. She met his eyes without looking away.

"You keep building it," he told Micah. "Keep your chair, too. But don't stop living your life while you wait for me. Okay?"

Micah considered this. "Can we go get lunch outside when you come home? Somewhere with normal milk?"

Isaac laughed through his tears. "That sounds like a very good plan."

They did not resume the cafeteria meal. Lena decided that Micah had endured enough for one day. Reed explained the complaints process privately and assured her that Micah could decline any further interview. He asked whether she wanted a copy of the incident number and the name of the independent investigator. She did. She also asked for written assurance that Isaac would not be disciplined for standing up during the incident.

Price gave the assurance through the proper office rather than asking her to trust a spoken promise. Before they left, he apologized to Micah without making a speech about leadership or good intentions.

"You came here to have lunch with your father," he said. "You should have been able to do that safely. I'm sorry we failed you."

Micah looked up at him. "Are you going to make him clean it up?"

Price glanced toward the corridor where Warren had disappeared. "There will be an investigation, and people will be held responsible for what the evidence shows. But you're not going to have to come back and watch."

The weeks afterward were not as simple as the moment when the three men entered the room. Eastfield reviewed its staff rosters and visitor-security procedures. The oversight office secured purchasing records, preserved camera footage, and interviewed witnesses away from the officers they had accused. Pike was removed from the visiting program during the inquiry. Warren lost his kitchen assignment and was transferred to a unit where he could not approach visiting families.
