"Your father teach you manners?"

Micah glanced toward Isaac. His dad had taken a step forward, but Pike was already approaching him. The little boy did not understand the silent argument taking place between the men. He knew only that his father looked frightened in a way Micah had never seen before.

"Warren, leave the kid alone," Isaac said.

Pike's radio crackled. "Brooks, sit back down. You're not authorized to leave your table."

Isaac held his hands open at his sides. "He's blocking my son. I'm asking him to move."

"And I'm giving you a direct order."

Warren leaned closer to Micah. "You hear that? Your daddy doesn't run things here."

Micah's throat tightened. He could feel the edge of the tray bending under his fingers. Across the room, Lena turned away from the form when she heard Isaac's voice. Mrs. Kessler moved toward them, her expression sharpening, but Warren had already taken a milk carton from the tray.

"Please," Micah said. "That's my lunch."

Warren glanced once at Pike. Then he opened the carton fully and poured it, slowly enough for everyone nearby to see that it was deliberate.

Milk washed over the food, over the paper placemat, and across the clear plastic sleeve containing Micah's drawing. The sleeve kept most of the liquid away from the front, but milk seeped through an unsealed edge and blurred two of the figures by the front door. Micah made a small sound and stumbled backward. He was not hurt. The shock was worse than pain: a grown man had humiliated him in front of his father, and nobody with a uniform had stopped it.

Lena reached him just as the last white stream fell from the carton. She pulled Micah against her and wiped his shirt with the edge of her sleeve.

"What is wrong with you?" she demanded.

Warren dropped the empty carton onto the tray. "Clumsy kid. Knocked it over himself."

"I watched you do it."

Pike stepped between her and the prisoner. "Ma'am, lower your voice. There are other children present."

Lena stared at him. "Exactly. There are children present."

Isaac advanced one step. Pike turned sharply, putting his hand near the restraints on his belt.

"Another step, Brooks, and your visit is over. You'll be written up for threatening staff."

Isaac stopped. He had learned that the distance between protecting his family and being accused of aggression could be one movement, one raised voice, one sentence written by somebody else. His fists trembled. He forced them open.

"Micah," he said, holding his son's gaze. "Look at me. You're safe with your mom. You didn't do anything wrong."

Micah was crying now, almost silently. He looked down at the drawing, then up at Warren. "I just wanted to eat with my dad."
