"Sure, it's up at the house. Give me two minutes," I said, already heading toward my modest ranch-style home.I could hear Sharon sputtering behind me about how credentials didn't matter and how the law was the law. I grabbed my wallet from the kitchen counter and pulled out my veterinary license, which I kept with me out of habit from my years working in clinical practice. When I returned, Officer Martinez studied it carefully, his expression softening into something that looked suspiciously like suppressed amusement. "You're a board-certified equine veterinarian," he observed."Twenty years," I confirmed. "Specialized in sports medicine and rehabilitation. I moved here specifically because I wanted to semi-retire and focus on caring for rescue horses."That last part made Sharon's eyes bulge. "Rescue horses? You mean you're planning to bring more of these creatures onto the property?""These creatures are horses, Mrs. Hendricks. And yes, eventually I plan to take in horses that need rehabilitation and find them good homes. It's all completely legal and within my property rights."Officer Martinez was nodding along, walking over to get a closer look at Thunder. My old boy stretched his neck out for pets, which Martinez obliged."This is one of the healthiest horses I've seen in a while, Dr. Baxter. Good muscle tone, clear eyes, shiny coat. What's his story?""Thunder here is a retired barrel racer. His previous owner developed dementia and could no longer care for him. I took him in about five years ago, and he's living his best life as a pasture ornament now." I scratched behind Thunder's ears, and he leaned into it with a contented sigh."And the others?" Martinez asked, genuinely interested now."The paint mare is Willow. She was a lesson horse who developed arthritis. Her barn was going to put her down, but she's perfectly comfortable with proper management and medication. The bay gelding is Ranger, a former police horse who got spooked by a backfiring car and developed anxiety. He's been improving steadily with consistent routine and a calm environment. The little chestnut is Penny. She's a former racehorse who wasn't fast enough and got bounced around from owner to owner. She was underweight when I got her, but she's gained about 200 pounds and is thriving now."Sharon was practically vibrating with indignation. "This is ridiculous! Officer, are you just going to stand here chatting about horses, or are you going to do your job?"Martinez turned to her, and his professional courtesy had noticeably cooled. "Madam, I am doing my job. My job is to investigate reports of animal neglect and abuse. What I see here is a licensed veterinarian providing exceptional care to his own animals on his own property. There's absolutely no violation occurring.""But the HOA rules clearly state that no livestock are permitted within the community!" Sharon said, pulling out a thick binder from her designer handbag. She began flipping through it frantically.
