"That camera is illegal!" she shrieked, pointing at the housing. "It's pointed at my property! It's a privacy violation!"
"The camera's field of view records property lines in a public space, Mrs. Calloway. It is completely legal under Indiana statute," Nyland countered.
I stayed quiet, letting Nyland run his scene.
"But he's been threatening us!" she hissed. "Stalking my son, making our lives hell because we're simply maintaining community standards!"
Nyland cut her off cleanly. "Your son is under arrest for felony criminal mischief."
Officer Perez turned Jackson around and slapped the cuffs on his wrists. The smirk was entirely gone from the kid's face; he was looking at Deandra with genuine terror, and she was staring at me as if I had just torched her entire world.
"This isn't over, Trudeau," she hissed, her teeth clenched. "I will completely destroy your life."
I took another slow sip of my coffee, looking her dead in the eyes. "I'm looking forward to it, Deandra."
The squad cars pulled away from the curb, with Jackson sitting in the rear bay. Deandra stood in my driveway, shaking with pure rage, before storming back across the cul-de-sac.
The blinds were moving all down the street. Mrs. Kowalski was watching from her front window, and several other neighbors were out on their porches. The entire cul-de-sac had just witnessed Deandra's golden boy being led away in steel restraints.
Sergeant Nyland paused by his driver's side door before leaving, lowering his voice. "She's got significant political pull with the township supervisor, Garrett. Watch your back."
I nodded. "I'm already planning on it, Sergeant."
The sun was fully up now, the birds were chirping, and the automated sprinklers were starting their morning cycles. The smell of hot coffee and leaking gasoline mixed in the warming air. I looked down at the Harley. Miranda's name was scarred, but it was still entirely visible.
