Carver listened. He did not interrupt her, and he did not nod along either. When she finished, he said, "Okay."And then he walked past her over to the low stone wall and crouched down slightly so he was closer to eye level with my mother, and he said, "Ma'am, I'm Officer Carver. I showed him the county parcel map with the boundary overlay.And then I turned and pointed at the sycamore and the creek bend, and I said, "That sign is about thirty-five feet inside her line. The fence is roughly the same. The new irrigation is well inside it. I photographed all of it this morning before anyone spoke to us."Sloan was already on her radio. She read the parcel number back and asked dispatch to pull the county assessor and recorder entries. And then she stood there with her head slightly tilted, listening, watching the tree line.Celeste felt it, and she pushed harder, which is her defining quality. "There is obviously a mistake in some old record," she said. "The association maintains this entire area. We mow it. We irrigate it. We've landscaped it. We've had it in our maintenance plan since before I joined the board. It's association property."
