With her authority stripped away entirely, Marissa made one final attempt to reclaim some version of control over the outcome. She drove to Calvin's impound facility and demanded that he open the gate and release the association's fleet immediately. Calvin, unmoved by a title that no longer carried any real weight, refused without hesitation.
Standing outside that fence, Marissa could see all 29 vehicles parked in neat rows behind it, completely out of her reach. It was an almost perfect mirror of the scene hours earlier when Wade had stood in his own empty yard, staring at the space where 22 vehicles used to be. Only hours before, she had walked through Wade's property, watching his fleet disappear one truck at a time, confident she held every advantage. Now she stood on the outside of a locked fence, watching the entire operational strength of her own community sit far beyond her reach.
Wade arrived at the impound lot not long after she did, and Marissa turned to him immediately, demanding that he give her fleet back. He answered her without raising his voice at all, telling her it was funny because he had asked her the exact same thing hours earlier that morning before the sun had even come up.
