The room went quiet in the way rooms go quiet when the air pressure changes. A young engineer near the coffee station dropped his clipboard; he did not bend down to pick it up. He had been reading Eleanor Ashford's textbooks since his sophomore year at Michigan; he had her signature from a conference three years earlier in a frame on his desk at home.Eleanor walked past Preston without looking at him. She walked to the front of the Helix 1. She placed one hand on the fender the way a surgeon places a hand on a patient's shoulder before a procedure. She tilted her head and closed her eyes for three seconds. No one spoke. Then she opened them again. She turned to the assembled engineers. "Where is she?"Harold Sullivan, who had been standing quietly by the tool crib, answered. "She eats lunch behind the food truck on Breaker Lane most days, ma'am. She has a three-legged dog with her.""Bring her in. Bring the dog. Don't frighten her."Preston stepped forward. "Eleanor, I don't think you understand the situation. We have an investor demo in twenty-four hours. We have eight hundred engineering hours already invested in the diagnostic tree. We cannot have a... a person from the sidewalk in this bay."Eleanor didn't turn her head. "Preston, I was putting hybrid powertrains into production vehicles when you were still at Choate. I'm going to say this once: sit down, or leave the room."He sat down.Twenty-two minutes later, Faye Carter walked through the side door of the Arkwell test bay for the first time in her life. Beans walked beside her on a length of paracord leash. Harold Sullivan walked half a pace behind her, carrying a folded moving blanket over his arm.Faye stopped three feet inside the door. She did not look at the engine; she looked at Eleanor."Ma'am?""Do you know who I am?""Yes, ma'am. I read your 2011 SAE paper on hydraulic tensioner preload sensitivity. The one you wrote with Dr. Voss. I have it in my van."Eleanor's face did something small and quick that most of the people in the room did not catch. Preston caught it, and it made him sink another half-inch into his chair.
