“You can cooperate, or we can do this the hard way.”
Across the parking lot, a young woman in a blue windbreaker slowed her pace. Her phone rose into filming position, camera lens aimed directly at the confrontation. Stewart took one controlled breath and delivered the information clearly, without embellishment or emotion.
He stated his full name. He identified himself as a retired United States District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, the same jurisdiction that had presided over numerous cases involving immigration and customs enforcement, detention standards, search-and-seizure violations, qualified-immunity defenses, and civil-rights litigation. He explained that he had served 28 years on the federal bench. He made certain Swanson understood that the stop violated clearly established constitutional law.
For exactly two seconds, something shifted behind Swanson’s eyes. It was not confusion or surprise. It was recognition, cold, deliberate, and personal. His hand moved to his belt, metal clicked against leather, and the handcuffs emerged.
“Turn around. Hands behind your back.”
Reed stepped forward, hesitant, but Eric Swanson cut him off with a single glance. Stewart turned slowly, laced his fingers together behind his back, and felt the steel close around both wrists. The cuffs bit into the thin skin above his pulse points. He did not resist, did not pull away, and did not offer a single justification for escalation.
Around them, more phones appeared. A man in a faded Cubs hat stood recording from the bed of his pickup truck 15 yards away. An older couple froze mid-stride near the shopping-cart return. A teenager in a Target uniform leaned against the brick facade, eyes wide, filming everything.
Swanson recited the Miranda warning in a voice loud enough to carry across three rows of parked cars. Stewart listened without comment. Reed moved to the Lexus and peered through the tinted windows, though no search warrant had been issued and no probable cause established. Stewart walked with measured steps toward the unmarked black SUV idling at the edge of the lot.
