Jets cornerback Kris Boyd in critical condition after NYC shooting

New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was shot and critically injured in Midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning, and is now fighting for his life at Bellevue Hospital, according to police and team officials. The shooting unfolded shortly after 2 a.m. on West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue — a stretch of Midtown known for late-night crowds and entertainment venues (New York Post; NBC News).

Although the NYPD did not publicly identify the victim, law-enforcement sources confirmed to The New York Post that it was the 29-year-old NFL player. Hours later, the Jets released a brief statement acknowledging Boyd's involvement in the incident: “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”

Gunfire after dispute outside trendy restaurant

According to police sources, Boyd was standing with a group of friends outside Sei Less, a high-profile Asian-fusion restaurant often frequented by celebrities, when a dispute escalated and turned violent. The gunman reportedly fired at least two shots, one of which struck Boyd in the abdomen. It remains unclear whether Boyd was the intended target (AP News).

Witnesses told investigators that the shooter fled in a dark-colored BMW X6 SUV, while a second vehicle — a silver Mercedes-Maybach, described as “high-end” and possibly connected to people involved in the altercation — sped away moments later. NYPD officials said witnesses at the scene were largely uncooperative, slowing the investigation (CNN).

Photos taken after the shooting also showed a Rhino GX, an armored luxury vehicle worth up to $300,000, parked outside the restaurant as police combed the area for evidence.

Boyd lost consciousness before being rushed to hospital

Sources said Boyd drifted in and out of consciousness after being shot. Emergency responders transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. As of Monday morning, no arrests have been made, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing (New York Times).

Sei Less issued its own statement, clarifying that the shooting occurred outside the establishment after business hours. “We have been fully cooperative with law enforcement and have shared the appropriate security footage to assist their inquiry,” the restaurant said.

Background on Kris Boyd’s career

Boyd joined the New York Jets earlier this year but has not appeared in a game this season. The 5-foot-11 defensive back previously played for the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans, entering the league in 2019 after being drafted out of the University of Texas. During his NFL career, Boyd has earned more than $8 million in player salary (ESPN; Spotrac).

He has been on the Jets’ injured reserve list since suffering a preseason shoulder injury and was still working toward a return to the field.

The Jets, who are coming off a loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday night, were not scheduled for practice on Sunday.

Celebrity hotspot with a history of high-profile visitors

Sei Less has become a draw for athletes, musicians, and entertainment figures. Its founder previously told Good Morning America that music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs once bought drinks for the entire venue during a visit — an anecdote highlighting the restaurant’s reputation as a nightlife magnet (ABC News).

Police continue investigation amid unanswered questions

Detectives are now reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing additional witnesses, and trying to determine the motive behind the shooting. Whether Boyd was directly targeted or simply caught in the middle of someone else's dispute remains one of the central questions investigators are working to answer.
