Priceless: Watch This Toddler With Hydrocephalus Take His First Steps
Toddler Diagnosed With Hydrocephalus Celebrates Milestone: First Steps at Age 2
When Braxton was born on Christmas Eve 2016, his parents received devastating news: he had Hydrocephalus, a condition commonly referred to as water on the brain. This disorder can lead to brain damage and can affect vision, speech, and the ability to walk or talk. Doctors initially warned his family that he “would be lucky to survive to see his first birthday” (reported by Children’s Health Journal and ABC News).

Against the odds, Braxton has not only survived but also thrived. While his initial care plan included end-of-life services, he transitioned to long-term care and is now approaching his second birthday this December. This week, the Litchfield Park, Arizona toddler achieved an extraordinary milestone: he took his first independent steps. The accomplishment has captured the attention of families and disability advocates nationwide, highlighting the resilience of children with special medical needs (CNN Health, NBC News).
Braxton’s mother, Alysa York, shared the priceless moment on Twitter, posting a video of her son taking his first steps. Within hours, the clip went viral, resonating with thousands of internet users who celebrated the triumph over immense medical challenges. Alysa followed up the next day with another video showing Braxton taking even more steps, each one a testament to his determination and progress.
Since Braxton’s diagnosis, Alysa has dedicated herself entirely to his care, stepping away from her job as a medical assistant to focus on giving him the best possible quality of life. She shared on the GoFundMe page she created for Braxton:
“This to me is a small sacrifice as I am committing to giving Braxton the best quality of life, which he deserves.”
Despite the joy of milestones, life presents daily challenges. As Braxton grows, the family must adapt to his evolving needs. Alysa explained that they are preparing for mobility solutions:
“He has a wheelchair that is being custom-made, but the vehicle I have is small (a Ford Fiesta). I am asking for help with getting a bigger vehicle to hold his wheelchair and make being mobile a little easier for him.”
The community responded quickly. Within just two days, the GoFundMe campaign had nearly reached its goal of raising $10,000, reflecting the widespread support for families navigating complex medical conditions (People Magazine, Good Morning America). Braxton is scheduled for his wheelchair fitting on October 15, marking the next step in his journey toward independence.
Braxton’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and hope. Each milestone he achieves reminds the world that children diagnosed with serious medical conditions can defy expectations with the love and care of a dedicated family. As Alysa said in an emotional post:
“Watching him walk is a reminder that life is precious, and every step forward is a victory.”
Go, Braxton! With your first steps behind you, there’s no telling what you’ll accomplish next. Families, friends, and followers alike will be cheering you on every step of the way.
