They remained there for a moment before Elijah looked toward the familiar table in the corner, the same place where he had spent months with headphones in, notebook open, reading cases while the rest of the world continued moving around him.
He walked over and ran one hand across the scratched wooden surface. Ms. Harmon watched from behind the desk.
"What happens now?" she asked.
Elijah looked through the window. Isaiah was waiting on the sidewalk, leaning against the bicycle with his arms folded and sunlight warming his face.
"I do not know," Elijah said. "But I am not finished."

Officer Haskins quietly took early retirement. Andrea Lindholm was reassigned to a lower-profile circuit. Judge Tolbert began appearing different in court, with less smirking and more listening.
At the next town meeting, when a teenager stood to propose a local education fund for children who could not afford test preparation or tutors, it was Tolbert who stood beside him. He wore no robe, only the expression of a man trying to do better.
Elijah did not suddenly become famous. Scholarships did not fall from the sky, and law-school offers did not arrive overnight. He simply continued studying and continued showing up.
