Racist Cops Jail the Wrong Driver—He’s the Chief of Police
He was perhaps forty-five, well dressed in the manner of a man who has recently acquired the money to dress well, and has not yet learned to wear it carelessly. And he sat in her cold drawing room with his hat balanced on his knee, and told her, in tones of great regret, that her late father had owed him 11,000 pounds, secured by a promissory note bearing her father's own signature. 11,000 pounds was not a sum that could be paid by selling gowns to a woman in Cheapside. £11,000 was a sum that ended houses, ended names, ended, very possibly, the freedom of the person who owed it, should the creditor choose to be unkind about the manner of its collection.
"I had hoped," Renfrew said, in the mild voice of a man who has rehearsed mildness because he knows what lies beneath it will frighten people if he lets it show too soon, "that we might discuss an arrangement. I am not an unreasonable man, Lady Florence. I do not wish to see the daughter of an old acquaintance brought to ruin over a debt that was, after all, none of her making." "What arrangement did you have in mind?" Florence said.
Renfrew looked at her for a long moment, and in that look Florence understood, with the swift, total clarity of a woman who has spent 4 months learning to read the small print of other people's intentions, precisely what he had come to propose, and precisely why he had waited until she was friendless and cold and alone in a house with no father in it to propose it. "You are a handsome woman," he said, "and I am, as I say, not unreasonable." Florence stood. It was the only response available to her that did not involve either weeping or striking him.
"You will have my answer, Mr. Renfrew, when I have had time to consider the matter properly. I will not be rushed into a decision of this consequence in a single morning." It was the single most useful lie she ever told because it was not, strictly, a lie at all.
She did intend to consider the matter properly. She simply did not intend to consider Renfrew's proposal as one of the options. She went to her desk that same afternoon and wrote to the Duke of Rutherford. Three lines, no more, in a hand she was careful to keep from shaking.
"Your Grace, my circumstances are worse than you have likely been told, and worse I suspect than you would wish to involve yourself in. If you are still willing to hear them plainly told, I will receive you Thursday at 11:00. F. Hartwell." He came Thursday at 11:00 precisely, which she would learn over the following months was entirely characteristic of him.
That James Rutherford arrived nowhere early and nowhere late, as though time itself had been instructed to fall into line with his preferences the way everything else in his life had long ago learned to do. He sat in her cold drawing room in the chair Renfrew had occupied 4 days before, and Florence, watching him take in the room's threadbare furnishings with an expression that gave away nothing at all, found herself abruptly and furiously ashamed in a way the ballroom's laughter had never quite managed to make her. "Tell me," he said, not unkindly, not gently either, simply as a man asks for information he intends to use. So, she told him.
She told him about her father's debts, the ones that were known and the one involving Renfrew's £11,000 that was not yet known to anyone but herself and now, God help her, to him. She told him about the mortgaged townhouse, which would be sold within the month regardless of what she did about anything else. She told him about the gowns she had sold to the woman in Cheapside and watched something move behind his eyes when she said it, though he did not otherwise change his expression by so much as a muscle. She did not tell him about Renfrew's proposal.
That, she had decided somewhere in the sleepless hours of the previous 3 nights, was hers to carry alone. When she had finished, the Duke of Rutherford sat in silence for what felt to Florence like a very long time.
"I will settle the debt to this Renfrew," he said finally. "The full amount, discreetly, through my own solicitor, so that no record connects it to your name or to mine. I will also clear the mortgage on this house, so that you need never again live under threat of losing it. I ask nothing from you in exchange for any of this beyond your permission to do it." Florence stared at him.
"Why?"
"I do not entirely know," he said at last. "I have not done a kindness of this size for anyone in a great many years, and I find I do not have a ready explanation for why I am doing this one. I saw you on those stairs, Lady Florence, and something in me that has been quiet for a long time was no longer quiet. I do not ask you to make sense of that. I have not yet made sense of it myself."
"I cannot accept charity, Your Grace."
