She found out where Sloan worked and showed up at the hospital, telling anyone who would listen that Sloan was "the other woman" who broke up our engagement. Made such a scene in the ER waiting room that security had to remove her.

When Sloan told me about it, I felt sick. This woman I had planned to marry was actively trying to sabotage the best relationship I had ever had. And for what? Because I would not drop everything to rescue her from the consequences of her own choices.

But here is where it gets really twisted.

Last week, Nia called me crying, saying she had something important to tell me about the baby.

"I think it might be yours," she said through tears. "I know the timing seems off, but I have been thinking about that last weekend we spent together before I left. Remember? We went to your cousin's wedding, stayed at that hotel."

I did remember. It was actually a good weekend. One of the last times we felt connected before everything fell apart.

For about 10 seconds, I felt that old familiar guilt creeping in. Maybe I owed it to her, to both of them, to at least find out.

"If there is a chance it is mine, we should do a DNA test," I said.

"Do we really need to put ourselves through that? I mean, does it matter biologically whose it is, if we are going to raise it together?"

That is when I knew she was lying.

If there was any real chance the baby was mine, she would want the DNA test to prove it. She was throwing out the possibility to manipulate me into taking responsibility without having to prove anything.

I insisted on the test. She agreed, but only after making it clear how hurtful it was that I did not trust her.

The results came back yesterday. Not mine. Not even close.

When I called to tell her, she immediately started backtracking.

"Well, I was not completely sure about the timing anyway. But Dex, does it really matter? You always wanted to be a father."

"It matters because you lied to manipulate me into taking responsibility for another man's child."

"I was not lying. I was confused about dates."

But something in her voice told me there was more to this story. So, I did what I probably should have done 8 months ago. I started asking around.

Turns out, Nia's exploration period was not just casual dating. She had been systematically targeting wealthy guys at upscale bars and events around the city.
