I didn't do it out of rage. I did it because her text had clarified something I had been ignoring for months. She didn't see me as a partner. She saw me as a convenience she could dismiss whenever it suited her.
By the time she started calling, the decision was already made.
First call came in at 11:47 p.m. I didn't answer. Second call, 11:52. Third call, 11:58.
Then texts. "Are you seriously ignoring me right now? This is childish. Answer your phone."
I replied once. "You made it clear I am not entitled to know where you are. You are not entitled to access to my home."
She showed up just after midnight.
I heard her in the hallway. Heels on tile. Fumbling with something, probably trying the old access code. Then knocking. Not frantic yet. Controlled, annoyed.
"Nico, open the door."
I stayed on the couch. Didn't move.
"I know you are in there. Don't do something dramatic because you got insecure at a work event."
Insecure. That word.
"You do this thing," she continued, voice sharper now, "where you turn one moment into a referendum on my whole character. Open the door."
I walked to the door. Didn't open it. Spoke through it.
"Your essentials are inside. Laptop, work stuff, medication. I will arrange a time for you to get the rest."
"Give me the code. I live here."
"No," I said. "You don't."
Silence. Then softer, almost confused. "What are you doing?"
"You told me I wasn't entitled to know where you were. I am taking you seriously for once."
"I didn't mean it like that."
"That is the problem, Sabrina. You never do."
She tried different angles for the next 20 minutes.
Anger: "You are being controlling. This is exactly why I need space."
Bargaining: "We can talk about this tomorrow. Just let me in."
Deflection: "Do you understand what you just ruined for me?"
That last one stuck with me. Not what you ruined for us. For me.
Finally, she left a voicemail. I listened to it later.
"Nico, call me back right now. You have no idea what you just blew up."
She was right about one thing. I didn't know.
If this were only about cheating, I think she would have said she was sorry. She didn't. She sounded panicked about something else.
