It belonged to Mr. Holloway, the Ashford family's longtime attorney, a man who had handled their legal affairs for nearly twenty-five years. He had risen slowly from his seat, and his face had gone the particular gray of a man watching a fact arrange itself in real time in front of him.

"Constance," Holloway said carefully, "I think you should sit down."

"I will not sit down in my own home!" Constance snapped.

"It stopped being your home the moment this financing closed," Holloway said. "It belongs to the party holding the note." He turned, slowly, toward the doorway. "And that party is standing right there."

Silence has a physical weight when it lands in the right room, and it landed then, pressing against every person seated at that table.

"Constance," Holloway said again, quieter this time, "Marin is Northlight Holdings. She has been the principal behind the financing from the beginning. Your daughter-in-law didn't just save the company. She owns the controlling interest in it, along with this house."

Nobody spoke for what felt like a very long time.

"That's..." Julian started, and stopped, and started again. "That's not... She doesn't have... She's not... She comes from nothing. She's a dock worker's daughter, for God's sake!"
