The woman who had once declared that Marin would never truly belong in this family now lived, without ever fully realizing the symmetry of it, in the exact kind of modest home Marin herself had grown up in. Not out of cruelty, but out of a mercy Constance would likely never understand well enough to be grateful for. And somehow, that quiet mercy carried more weight than any punishment could have.

Julian came to see her once more, weeks later, standing in the same great hall where everything had come apart. He looked smaller than she remembered, the charm gone, and without it, there wasn't a great deal left standing in front of her.

"I didn't know who you were," he said. "I swear to you, Marin, I didn't know."

She looked at him for a long moment before answering, and when she finally did, there was no anger left in her voice at all—only something quieter and considerably sadder.

"That was always the problem," she said. "You never once tried to find out. You only ever wanted to know what I could make you look like standing next to me."

He opened his mouth to answer and closed it again, because there was nothing left worth saying that hadn't already arrived several years too late.

Marin walked past him to the tall doors of the great hall and opened them herself. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't throw him out the way his mother had once thrown her belongings onto wet stone. She simply held the door, the way he had once held one open for someone else, and waited.

He walked through it alone into ordinary daylight, with nothing left to blame and no one left willing to carry the weight of his shame for him. She closed the door softly behind him. A woman who has finally stopped needing anyone's approval never needs to slam a door to prove a point.
