The CEO Mocked the Single Dad for Buying 17 “Dead” Cars for $2,500 — 30 Days Later, She Regretted It
Funny when a room needed winning over.
Patient with Noah's homework.
Attentive on anniversaries.
He was the man who held my hair when morning sickness made me vomit.
The man who slept on a hospital floor after Noah broke his arm.
The man who had cried at my father's funeral.
Now I wondered how many versions of Daniel existed and which one had ever been mine.
Thomas restarted the recording.
Daniel's voice said, “The business is in trouble.”
Mom replied, “That isn't Laura's fault.”
“I didn't say it was.”
“You borrowed against your house.”
My head snapped toward him.
Daniel stared straight ahead.
The recording continued.
Mom said, “Did Laura sign those papers?”
Silence.
“Daniel?”
“I handled the financing.”
“That wasn't my question.”
“Margaret—”
“Did my daughter sign those papers?”
Another silence.
Then Daniel said, “She doesn't understand business financing.”
I felt my fingers go numb.
“What papers?” I whispered.
Thomas looked at me but didn't answer yet.
Mom's voice came through again.
“So you forged her signature.”
Daniel stood.
“Turn that off.”
Thomas didn't.
“Turn it off!”
On the recording, Daniel's voice became sharper.
“You want the truth? Fine. I had a cash-flow problem. A temporary one. Your daughter panics about money. I solved it.”
“You forged her name.”
“I protected our family.”
“You stole her choice.”
“I was going to replace every dollar.”
“With what?”
Silence.
Mom answered her own question.
“My estate.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
For perhaps ten seconds, the loudest sound in the room was Rachel crying.
I looked at Daniel.
“What did you forge?”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“Laura, don't do this here.”
“What did you forge?”
“It can be fixed.”
“What?”
“A home equity line.”
My stomach twisted.
“How much?”
He said nothing.
Thomas answered.
“Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”
I stared at him.
I actually laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my brain rejected the number.
“Our house isn't even paid off.”
“I know.”
“How much do we owe now?”
Daniel leaned toward me.
“The company is going to recover.”
“How much?”
“Laura.”
“How much?”
“About six hundred thousand total.”
Noah whispered, “Dad?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I looked at our son.
His face had gone pale.
I pulled him closer.
My grief changed shape.
This wasn't just an affair.
Daniel had risked the house where our son slept.
Then tried to use my dying mother's estate to repair the damage.
Rachel whispered, “You told me the loan was only two hundred thousand.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“Not now.”
“You told me selling Margaret's house would cover everything.”
I stared at her.
“Selling my mother's house?”
Rachel realized what she had said.
Daniel stood so abruptly his chair fell backward.
“Enough.”
Thomas remained seated.
“No, actually. That helps.”
Daniel pointed at him.
“You think you're clever?”
“I think Margaret was.”
That silenced him.
Thomas opened another envelope.
“Margaret discovered the forged loan approximately two months before her death.”
“How?”
I barely recognized my own voice.
“She saw a bank notice on your kitchen counter when Noah brought her home after an appointment. She asked me to investigate.”
Daniel stared.
“You had no right to investigate my finances.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You had no right to sign your wife's name.”
Daniel's face reddened.
Thomas continued.
“Margaret initially believed the debt was your only motive. Then she discovered Rachel.”
I looked at Rachel.
“When did this start?”
Her hands were trembling.
“Laura—”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
She stared back.
“What?”
He lowered his voice.
“We agreed.”
Something inside her changed.
Maybe she realized she was still protecting him while he protected only himself.
“Twelve months,” she said.
Daniel swore.
I looked at her.
“You've been sleeping with him for a year.”
“Yes.”
“A year.”
She nodded.
My mother had been diagnosed fourteen months earlier.
I understood immediately.
“Did it start here?”
Rachel didn't answer.
“In Mom's house?”
Her silence was enough.
I felt physically ill.
Rachel finally whispered, “It wasn't supposed to happen.”
I slapped the table.
“Stop saying that.”
Everyone jumped.
“You didn't trip and become pregnant. You didn't accidentally hide an affair for a year. You made decisions every day.”
She cried harder.
“I know.”
“No. You know now because you're sitting in front of a lawyer.”
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Leave her alone.”
I looked at him.
Then Rachel.
Something bitter and almost funny entered my mind.
“You're defending her.”
“She is pregnant.”
“So was I once.”
He went silent.
“You remember that?”
“Laura.”
“I was pregnant with Noah when you promised me there would never be another person between us.”
Noah looked down.
I immediately regretted saying it in front of him.
Thomas saw my face.
“Noah,” he said gently, “there's a waiting room outside if you'd rather—”
“No.”
My son shook his head.
“I want to stay.”
Daniel scoffed.
“Of course you do. Everyone wants the show.”
Noah looked at his father.
“Grandma said you'd get angry when people stopped believing you.”
That landed harder than anything I could have said.
Daniel stared at him.
“You think Grandma understood everything? She was dying, Noah.”
Noah's face tightened.
“She understood you.”
“Enough.”
“No.”
It was the first time I had ever heard my son say that word to his father with no hesitation.
Daniel froze.
Noah pointed toward the watch.
“That wasn't the recording Grandma told Mr. Foster about.”
Thomas looked at him.
“What?”
My pulse jumped.
Daniel's face changed instantly.
“What do you mean?”
Noah swallowed.
“The watch recorded that because Grandma told me to leave it on the table. But there's another one.”
“Where?”
Daniel's question came too quickly.
