Noah looked at me.
“I made it.”
My heart sank.
“Noah.”
“I wasn't spying.”
He was already defensive.
“I swear.”
“What happened?”
He looked toward Rachel.
“Three weeks before Grandma died, I forgot my backpack at her house.”
Nobody moved.
“I went back after soccer.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Dad's truck wasn't out front.”
Daniel slowly sat down.
“But he was there,” Noah said.
Rachel covered her face.
“I heard them in Grandma's bedroom.”
“Doing what?” Thomas asked.
“Arguing.”
Noah picked up the watch and scrolled.
“I got scared because they were talking about Mom.”
He pressed play.
The first sounds were muffled.
Footsteps.
A door closing.
Then Rachel.
“You said she would sign it.”
Daniel answered.
“She will.”
“She told me no again.”
“Then wait until after the night medication.”
My skin went cold.
Rachel looked at Thomas.
“That's not what it sounds like.”
Thomas raised a hand.
The recording continued.
Rachel said, “She's weaker after the morphine.”
Daniel replied, “Exactly.”
I stopped breathing.
Rachel stood.
“No.”
Daniel whispered, “Sit down.”
“No, you told me—”
“Rachel.”
She looked at me desperately.
“We never drugged her.”
I stared at her.
“Keep listening.”
On the recording Daniel said, “You put the amendment with the medical papers. She signs where you tell her. She isn't going to read six pages.”
Rachel answered, “What if Foster challenges it?”
“He can't challenge what he doesn't know about until she's gone.”
My stomach turned.
Thomas's expression hardened.
Daniel looked toward the door.
For the first time, he seemed less angry than afraid.
The recording continued.
Rachel whispered, “And Laura?”
Daniel laughed.
“Laura will be too busy grieving.”
Noah stopped the recording.
He was crying.
“That's when I left.”
I pulled him into me.
“You should never have had to hear that.”
“I didn't know what they meant.”
“I know.”
“I thought they were trying to make Grandma sign something.”
“You did the right thing.”
“I called Grandma from outside.”
I looked at him.
“She was awake?”
He nodded.
“She told me to come back in.”
“What happened?”
“She made me play the recording.”
Daniel's eyes closed.
Noah continued.
“Grandma wasn't crying. She just got really quiet.”
My son looked toward Thomas.
“Then she called you.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
A chill went through me.
Mom had known everything three weeks before she died.
And instead of confronting them, she had made a phone call.
Daniel suddenly laughed.
“So this is the plan? A scared kid records half a conversation, everyone decides I'm some criminal, and Laura gets everything?”
Thomas opened the cream folder again.
“No.”
Daniel's smile vanished.
“No?”
“No one is relying solely on Noah's recording.”
Rachel looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas slid the supposed trust amendment across the table.
“This is the document you believed Margaret signed.”
Rachel stared at it.
“She did sign it.”
“You watched her?”
“Yes.”
Daniel tried to stop her.
“Rachel.”
Thomas continued.
“Was Margaret conscious?”
“Yes.”
“Did she understand she was signing a trust amendment?”
Rachel hesitated.
Daniel's eyes fixed on her.
“Yes,” she finally said.
Thomas nodded.
“And nobody pressured her?”
“No.”
“And you believe this document gives you Margaret's house?”
Rachel swallowed.
“Yes.”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“And gives you control of the remaining trust assets?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He reached into the folder.
“Margaret wanted those answers clearly stated.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
Thomas placed a second document beside the first.
“Because Margaret did not sign a trust amendment.”
Rachel stared at him.
“I watched her.”
“You watched her sign a document.”
“What are you talking about?”
Thomas turned the paper around.
I read the heading.
STATEMENT REGARDING SUSPECTED FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION AND UNDUE INFLUENCE.
My mouth opened.
Rachel's face went blank.
Thomas said, “Margaret and I prepared two nearly identical document packets after Noah gave her his recording.”
Daniel reached for the document.
Thomas pulled it back.
“The cover pages were intentionally similar.”
“You tricked us.”
“No. Margaret allowed you to reveal what you were willing to do.”
Rachel began shaking her head.
“She signed the pages.”
“Yes.”
“What did she sign?”
“A sworn statement documenting the circumstances under which you presented estate documents to her.”
Rachel stared.
Thomas continued.
“She wrote down the time you gave her medication. The statements you made about Laura. Daniel's debt. The promises concerning the house. She signed it in front of two independent witnesses who entered the room after you left.”
Daniel's face was completely white.
“That doesn't invalidate the other document.”
“There is no other document.”
Silence.
Rachel looked at him.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
Thomas leaned back.
“Margaret switched the packets before Rachel entered the room.”
I stared at him.
Mom had set a trap.
Rachel whispered, “No.”
Thomas nodded toward the photocopy.
“The document you sent me after Margaret's death is a copy Daniel created from an unsigned draft.”
Daniel shot upright.
“That's a lie.”
“The metadata on the electronic file traces to your office computer.”
“I printed documents for Margaret.”
“You also added a scanned image of her signature.”
Daniel stopped.
My heart pounded.
Thomas continued.
“The signature on the document you submitted is identical, pixel for pixel, to a signature Margaret placed on a property-tax appeal two years ago.”
Rachel slowly turned toward Daniel.
“You said she signed it.”
“She did.”
“No.”
“Rachel.”
“You told me the copy was legitimate.”
“Stop talking.”
“You told me Foster had the original.”
“Rachel.”
Her voice rose.
“You told me I was protected.”
Daniel stood.
“You knew exactly what we were doing.”
The words came out before he could stop them.
Thomas didn't move.
Neither did I.
