Timing. Stress. Family circumstances. Anything except choice.

Then Ryan said, “If he knew about December, he would never forgive either of us.” Melissa’s face tightened instantly. “He can’t know about December.”

There it was. Confirmation without interpretation.

I saved the clip. Then I closed the application. I finally had enough.

The next morning, I returned home shortly after nine. Melissa was making pancakes while Ryan sat at the kitchen island. Both looked up when I walked through the door.

“You’re early,” Melissa said. “Meeting got canceled.”

Ryan smiled. “Lucky you.”

I put down the overnight bag. “Actually, yeah.” I removed my jacket. “I think I finally got lucky.”

Melissa stared at me. I walked to the coffee machine, poured a cup, and sat down.

Nobody spoke. The normality of pancakes sizzling on the stove nearly made everything feel unreal. Then I looked at Ryan.

“Rachel says hello.” His face changed just enough. Melissa stopped moving completely.

“You talked to Rachel?” Ryan asked. “I did.”

“Why?” I took a sip of coffee. “She had some old pictures I wanted.”

Melissa spoke carefully. “What pictures?”

I looked at her. “December.”

The spatula slipped from her hand and hit the stovetop. No one moved. Ryan stared down at the countertop.

“Ethan,” Melissa whispered. I lifted one hand. “Not yet.”

I placed my phone on the island. Then I pressed play.

Melissa’s voice filled the kitchen. We can’t keep doing this in the car. Ryan answered, You weren’t saying that last time.

The recording continued. My husband’s already asking questions. Then Ryan: He still doesn’t know about us.

Not yet.

When the clip ended, the kitchen was silent. Ryan stared at the floor. Melissa looked at me like she had been waiting for shouting and did not know what to do with the absence of it.

“How long?” I asked. Melissa swallowed. “Ethan, I can explain.”

“That isn’t an answer.” Ryan finally spoke.

“Started around Christmas.” Melissa turned toward him immediately. “Ryan, don’t.”

I looked at my brother. “Keep going.”

He rubbed both hands across his face. “It wasn’t supposed to become this.”

I almost laughed. “What exactly was it supposed to become?”

Ryan had no answer. Melissa took one small step toward me. “You were gone so much because of your dad, Ryan was going through the breakup, and we started talking.”

“And then?” Her eyes filled. “Something crossed a line.”

“For eight months?” I asked.

“It wasn’t constant.” The sentence landed worse than she expected.

I leaned back. “So there were scheduled breaks?” Melissa closed her eyes. Ryan whispered her name.

“No.” I looked between them. “I’d like to hear the calendar.”

Neither spoke. I slid my phone toward Ryan.

“I let you live here.” He nodded.

“I know.” I continued. “You ate at my table.”

“I know.” “You asked me yesterday whether I wanted help repairing the deck.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened. “I know.”

“And all that time, you were sleeping down the hall from my wife.” Melissa flinched. Ryan finally looked up.

“I’m sorry.” I stared at him.

“Do you know why that sentence is useless?” Ryan shook his head.

“You had months to be sorry before I knew.” I leaned forward. “You chose secrecy instead.”

Melissa began crying quietly. I had imagined this conversation a dozen different ways since watching the first recording. In every version, I screamed.

Reality made screaming feel like too much effort. “I spoke to an attorney,” I said.

Melissa’s head snapped upward. “What?”

“I’m not deciding everything today.” I looked at her. “But I’m done calling this confusion.”
