Ryan stood. “I’ll leave.”

“Yes.” He nodded.

Melissa looked between us. “Ethan, please.”

“I’m not asking for another explanation.” She wiped her face. “You don’t understand everything.”

Something about the sentence changed the room. Ryan looked toward her immediately. It was not anger.

It was warning. Small, fast, unmistakable. Melissa saw me notice it.

I leaned back. “What don’t I understand?”

“Nothing,” Ryan said.

I turned toward him. “I wasn’t talking to you.”

Melissa opened her mouth. Then closed it. Ryan reached for his keys.

“I’ll pack.” He walked upstairs.

I watched until his footsteps disappeared. Then I looked at Melissa again.

“Was Ryan the only one?” Her eyes widened.

“Yes.” The answer came too quickly.

I had not planned to ask. Maybe the glance between them made me suspicious. Maybe after enough lies, instinct begins translating things before logic catches up.

“Are you sure?” I asked. “Yes.”

My phone buzzed. A message from Rachel.

The night before, I asked her to send every remaining screenshot, including anything she considered meaningless. Twelve images had just arrived. I opened the first.

Melissa and Ryan arranging a Thursday meeting. The second discussed my father. The third was an argument.

The fourth stopped me. Melissa had written, He saw the mark in the car. Ryan answered, Which one?

Melissa: The white one. Ryan: Then stop using the back seat with him.

I read it twice. With him.

Not with me. Not with us. Him.

I looked across the island. Melissa had seen my expression change. “What?”

I turned the phone toward her. Every trace of color left her face. “What does ‘him’ mean?”

She did not answer. Upstairs, Ryan stopped moving. Even from the kitchen, I could hear the sudden absence of footsteps.

“Nathan—” No, Ryan now—Ryan’s room became completely quiet. I looked toward the ceiling and then back at my wife. “Ryan wasn’t the person leaving those marks in the back seat, was he?”

“Ethan—”

“Was he?” Her lips trembled.

Before she answered, Ryan came downstairs carrying a duffel bag. He saw the screenshot on my phone, then looked toward Melissa. For the first time since the confrontation started, my brother looked genuinely frightened.

“Don’t,” he said. I stood.

“Don’t what?” Ryan dropped the bag near the stairs.

Melissa whispered his name. He ignored her. “You wanted the truth about me and Melissa.”

“You have it.” I shook my head.

“No.” I lifted the phone. “I have the part you two decided I was allowed to know.”

Ryan’s eyes moved toward the front door. That was when I understood there was still something larger behind all of this. I stepped away from the island.

“Who is he?” Neither answered.

I looked at Melissa. “You were worried I saw something in the back seat, and Ryan told you to stop using it with another man.”

Her head shook quickly. “It isn’t what you think.”

I gave a short laugh. “That sentence should be illegal after adultery.”

Ryan picked up his duffel bag. “I’m leaving.”

“Go ahead.” I moved aside.

“But before you go, tell me why you were helping my wife hide somebody else.” Ryan stopped.

Melissa looked toward him. “Ethan, please.”

I stared at her. “Eight months with my brother, and somehow that isn’t the whole story.”

Tears ran down her cheeks. Ryan opened the front door.
