Never Throw Away This Part of Bananas: That’s Why It’s Worth Gold in the Home
When it comes to disposing of bananas, one particular part should never be tossed out because it could be highly beneficial for our home. Let’s find out which part that is.
Seasonal Fruits and Ever-Present Bananas
Each season brings its own fruits, and we often await certain ones to relish our favorite flavors and enjoy the taste of our preferred fruit to the fullest.
However, some fruits are available year-round and are among the most popular and commonplace, even if they originate from regions far different from where we live.
Bananas: Why You Shouldn’t Throw Everything Away
Bananas are one such fruit that we Italians love. They are highly beneficial for our health as a source of potassium and can be used in a wide variety of recipes.
Hailing from tropical zones, bananas have graced our peninsula for many years and are nearly always present in our homes to the extent of being featured in some still-life paintings.
Often, due to their shape, bananas are associated with the male member, and their name is used in sexual allusions, further popularized by the 2000s hit song “La Banane.”
In the market, bananas are typically found in yellow or green depending on their ripeness, although it is advisable, as per experts, to consume those that are moderately ripe.
There are several types of bananas, including the light blue ones, which, due to their maturation, usually have a vanilla taste but are almost impossible to find in Italy.
Lately, in Italy, one can find much sweeter red bananas, although they come at a high cost, approximately three times that of regular bananas.
The Little-Known Secret
Bananas have also become a favorite among children, gaining popularity through the Minions characters from the “Despicable Me” series, who have a sweet tooth for this fruit.
But not everyone knows that by eating only the inside of the fruit and discarding the peel, we are actually wasting something truly valuable that we should all be using at home.
Online videos suggest that after peeling a banana, the hard part at the end containing all the fruit should be kept and allowed to dry.
However, before placing it in the sun, it’s recommended to cut the stem and open it to reveal all the fibers, which are then torn and placed in a container exposed to sunlight for a few hours.
Bananafiber as Plant Fertilizer
What we’ll end up with is a set of banana fibers that will be very beneficial for our plants. When placed in the soil inside the pot, they act as an excellent fertilizer.
In this way, our plants will become strong and robust, acquiring not just water but also the intrinsic properties of the banana fibers. These fibers, when in contact with water and soil, will impart vigor to our plants.
