Instead of rehearsing the old high-energy routine, Julian focuses on the basics: moving together side by side, finding a rhythm in the small victories. If Thunder gets nervous, they stop. If Julian's arms tire, they rest.

Each day brings small progress: Thunder standing calmly as Julian wheels alongside him, responding to the new cues, beginning to trust again. Caleb shows up almost every afternoon, cracking jokes, tossing Julian protein bars, or just keeping him company. He helps with the new exercises, sometimes acting as Thunder's backup buddy to reinforce commands or help guide the stallion when Julian needs a break.

Even the ranch hands notice the change. Instead of pushing for perfection, Julian is letting go of old expectations, and Thunder is responding.

A few days before the festival, the organizers call to check in. Julian's mom answers, her voice confident: "We're adapting our routine, but we'll be there."

Julian hears the concern in their voices—worries about safety, about the critics, about the sponsors. But for once, he doesn't let it shake him. He knows what really matters: the bond he and Thunder have rebuilt, the quiet trust that can't be measured by medals or applause.

The morning of the festival arrives, and the air is thick with anticipation. Trucks and trailers line the event grounds. Banners flap in the breeze, and the scent of hay mixes with that particular energy of competition: part excitement, part nerves.

Julian sits in the shade of the barn, reviewing the new plan with Caleb and his mom. They go over the cues one last time, running through scenarios: What if Thunder spooks? What if Julian fumbles a signal? What if something goes wrong in front of thousands of people?

Julian looks at his team, then at Thunder, who stands quietly by the stall, ears flicking as he watches the world go by. "We're ready," Julian says, more to himself than anyone else.

Just before it's their turn to enter the ring, Julian's mom crouches beside him, her eyes bright with emotion. "You don't have to prove anything to anyone," she whispers. "No matter what happens in there, I'm proud of you."

Caleb squeezes his shoulder. "Show them what real teamwork looks like, Jules."

Julian takes a slow, steady breath. He wheels himself to the gate, Thunder walking calmly at his side, and they wait for the announcer to call their names. Around them, the crowd grows quiet, sensing something special is about to unfold.

As they roll into the arena, Julian glances at Thunder and nods. "Let's do this our way."
