"One and a half miles."
"Full flaps," she said, and deployed them. The aircraft slowed sharply, nose pitching slightly, and she corrected with back pressure. The hydraulics read 1,000.
The runway was ahead and below, growing in the windscreen.
Her father's voice: "You don't fight the plane. You listen to it."
The aircraft was telling her things: the left engine was telling her it was tired; the hydraulics were telling her they were nearly done; the trim fault was still there, a persistent lean that she'd been compensating for so long it had become part of her inputs—automatic now, built into her hands without her thinking about it. She listened to all of it, and she flew.
"One mile." Airspeed 143. "Good sink rate."
She adjusted. The runway threshold was coming up.
"Half-mile."
She was slightly high. She reduced thrust on the right engine—the left was already at minimum—and let the aircraft descend. The threshold markers were visible now: the faded white paint of a runway that hadn't been used in years.
"You're looking good," Reeves said. His voice had changed: quieter, something in it that wasn't professional distance anymore. "You're looking really good."
She didn't respond. All of her was on the aircraft.
The threshold passed under the nose. She pulled back gently, feeling for the flare, asking the aircraft to stop flying and start landing.
The main gear touched first: a firm, solid contact that she felt in her spine. And then she was on the runway, decelerating, and she reached for the thrust reversers.
The left reverser deployed. The right reverser hesitated—half a second, one second—and then deployed unevenly, and the aircraft yawed hard to the left toward the cracked section of runway, toward the edge.
