Roy caught Ren's eye and gave a small, steady nod of his own. Ren felt something rise in her throat that had nothing to do with fear.At 9:30, Dean Whitlow called the hearing to order."This proceeding concerns an allegation of academic dishonesty against Miss Ren Hartman," she said, "in relation to work presented during Professor Ridgeway's Mathematics 101 course."Ridgeway sat at the committee table: calm, composed, the picture of a man simply doing his duty. Beside his notes sat a second folder, thin and faded, that he had not shown to anyone; he had carried it out of his office that morning without fully deciding why.Sterling sat beside him, a folder of printed evidence in front of him, practically vibrating with confidence."Mr. Doyle," Dean Whitlow said, "please present your findings."Sterling stood, adjusted his jacket, and cleared his throat like a man who had rehearsed this moment more than once. "Thank you, Dean Whitlow." He held up his phone, the enlarged photo displayed on the screen behind him. "This is the notation Miss Hartman used to solve a step of the Ashworth conjecture in class." He clicked to the next slide: a screenshot of an old academic forum, dense with symbols. "And this is a nearly identical notation found on an unaffiliated mathematics forum, posted years ago under an anonymous username."A murmur moved through the crowd."The similarity," Sterling continued, "is too precise to be coincidence."Ridgeway nodded, slow and grave, as if the weight of this discovery pained him personally. Somewhere in the middle rows, Aaron, the soft-spoken graduate student from the lounge, shifted uncomfortably in his seat, watching his friend with an expression that had nothing confident left in it at all."Miss Hartman," Dean Whitlow said, "do you have a response?"Ren stood. Her legs felt unsteady, but her voice, when it came, did not. "I didn't copy anything from a forum," she said. "I've never even seen that page before.""Then how do you explain the similarity?" Sterling asked, not waiting for the dean's permission."I can't," Ren admitted. "I don't know that forum. But I know where I learned that notation."
