A murmur moved through the room. Some students turned to look at Ridgeway with new interest, the kind reserved for legends.Ridgeway allowed himself a small, practiced smile, one he had clearly used before. "'Almost' is a generous word," he said. "But yes. Once, a long time ago, I came closer than anyone since." He tapped the chalk against the board. "That is why I know, better than anyone, what this problem takes from a person. It takes years. It takes everything you have. And in the end, it may still leave you with nothing but disappointment."The room was quiet, half in awe, half in discomfort.Sterling stepped forward, chalk in hand now, eager to show off in front of his mentor the way a dog fetches a stick nobody asked it to fetch. "May I try, Professor? Just the opening steps."Ridgeway waved a hand, amused. "Go ahead. Humor us."Sterling wrote quickly, confident, his handwriting neat and practiced.
