Walking home that day, the reality of her situation settled heavily on her shoulders. The system wasn't broken; it was working exactly as designed, protecting those it was built to protect.

That evening, a tall Black man with graying temples arrived at their apartment. Detective Marcus Ross of the Westfield Police Department had kind eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor as he took Aaliyah's statement, reviewing their evidence with professional thoroughness while Monica hovered nervously.

"This pattern shows premeditation," he noted, studying the screenshots. "Coordinated harassment campaigns like this don't happen accidentally."

For the first time in weeks, Aaliyah felt a flicker of hope. Here was someone who took them seriously, who saw the situation clearly.

"I'll bring these boys in for questioning," Detective Ross promised. "This crosses several legal boundaries." Before leaving, he hesitated at the door. "I should warn you: the Hastings family has deep connections in this town. I'll do my job, but..."

He didn't need to finish the thought. Monica and Aaliyah exchanged knowing glances; they'd heard such promises before.

Two days later, Detective Ross called Monica from his car, frustration evident in his voice. "Mrs. Carter, I've been pulled from the investigation. Chief Warren claims conflict of interest, but I just watched Mayor Hastings leave his office." He lowered his voice. "They're closing ranks. The department won't pursue this officially, but I'm not done. Keep documenting everything."

That evening, Ross parked down the street from the Carters' apartment, watching as a black SUV with tinted windows cruised slowly past their building for the third time that night. He photographed the license plate, his expression grim.

The following week, Monica returned home ashen-faced, still in her scrubs. Aaliyah knew something was wrong before her mother said a word.

"They fired me today," Monica said, voice trembling. "Budget cuts, supposedly. Twenty years at Westfield Memorial, perfect evaluations, and suddenly my position is redundant."

Aaliyah connected the dots instantly: Mrs. Hastings was on the hospital board.
