Maya's fingers tightened around her notepad. Mr. Harris had warned her about difficult customers, but he had also told her never to tolerate threats. She looked toward the kitchen door. Mr. Harris wasn't there. He had gone home 40 minutes earlier after leaving her with instructions to lock up when the last customers left.Maya looked back at the man. "What can I get you?"The bearded man smiled. "Now that's better."He ordered four burgers, fries, wings, and several beers. Maya wrote everything down."Anything else?""Yeah," he said. "Try smiling."Maya gave him a polite expression. "Anything else?"The man laughed. "That's better."She walked away, her heart beating faster now. She entered the kitchen and placed the order. The cook, an older man named Ray, looked at her face. "What happened?""Nothing."Ray shook his head. "Don't give me that. I've known you too long."Maya glanced toward the dining room. "Four guys came in. They're being rude."Ray lowered his voice. "Want me to call Harris?"Maya hesitated. "No, it's fine.""You sure?""I'll handle it."Ray nodded, but he didn't look convinced.20 minutes later, Maya carried the food to the table. The men immediately started eating. For several minutes, things were quiet. Maya began to relax. Maybe they were just loud and arrogant; maybe once they ate, they'd leave. Then the bearded man held up his empty glass. "Hey."Maya walked over. "Yes?""Refill."She took the glass. "Sure.""And don't take forever."Maya nodded. She walked toward the counter. Behind her, one of the younger men laughed. "She walks like she's scared."The tattooed man replied, "Maybe she should be."Maya pretended she hadn't heard. She filled the glass and returned. The bearded man took it."You finally learned."Maya turned away."Hey."She stopped again. "What?"The man pointed at the table. "You forgot the ketchup.""There are bottles on the table."He looked down, then back at her. "Bring me a new one."Maya stared at the three ketchup bottles already sitting there. "Those are full.""Did I ask if they're full?"The other men laughed. Maya felt anger rising in her chest. She reached for another bottle and placed it on the table. "Here."The bearded man grabbed it. "You got an attitude?""No.""You sure?""Yes."He leaned forward. "You better watch yourself."Maya stepped back. For the first time, fear replaced irritation. The diner suddenly felt much smaller. She returned behind the counter. Ray came out of the kitchen."Maya.""I know.""I'm calling Harris.""Please don't.""Why?""Because I don't want this becoming a bigger problem."Ray looked toward the booth. "They already made it a problem."Before Maya could answer, the front door opened. A cold gust of wind swept through the diner. Then came a sound: low, deep, several motorcycle engines growling outside.
