The men in the booth stopped talking. Maya looked toward the window.Through the rain-streaked glass, she saw headlights: one motorcycle, then another, then another. Five motorcycles rolled into the parking lot and stopped beneath the diner sign. The engines shut off one by one. Silence followed. The four men exchanged glances. "What the hell?" one of them muttered. The first biker walked toward the entrance. He was a large man wearing a black leather vest over a dark shirt. Gray streaked his beard and rainwater dripped from his helmet. Behind him came four more bikers. They entered quietly. No shouting. No threats. Just five men who suddenly made the entire diner feel different. The leader removed his helmet. His name was Jack Mercer. He was 48 years old and had been riding motorcycles for more than three decades. He looked around. Then his eyes stopped on Maya. She was standing behind the counter holding a glass. Jack noticed the fear in her face. He noticed the way her hands were trembling. Then he looked at the four men in the booth. His expression changed—not anger, something colder. He walked toward the counter. "Evening."Maya nodded. "E—"Jack glanced at the clock. "You still serving?"Maya forced a small smile. "Yes.""Good." He looked at his friends. "Guys."The other bikers took seats at the counter. Maya grabbed menus. Jack noticed the slight tremor in her hands."You okay?"Maya hesitated. "Yes."Jack looked at her for another second. "No, you're not."The bearded man at the booth laughed loudly. "Mind your own business."Jack slowly turned. The diner became silent. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked at Maya, then at Ray, then at the four men."What happened?"Maya shook her head. "Nothing."The bearded man laughed. "She knows better."Jack's eyes narrowed. One of his friends, a massive biker named Cole, looked toward the booth. "What did you say?"The bearded man stood. "I said she knows better."Cole stood, too. Jack raised one hand; Cole immediately stopped.Jack remained calm. He walked toward the booth. The other bikers stayed where they were. Jack stopped several feet away."You boys having a bad night?"The bearded man folded his arms. "No.""Good." Jack nodded. "Then you won't mind treating the waitress with some respect."The man laughed. "Who are you?""Nobody important.""Then sit down and mind your business."Jack smiled faintly. "I would." He glanced toward Maya. "But you made her business mine when you started threatening her."The tattooed man leaned forward. "We didn't threaten anybody."Maya looked down. Jack noticed. He didn't need more information. He turned toward the counter."Maya, did they threaten you?"
