"And then Finn," Carly said. "And it was like — there was only so much of me. There was only so much. And it all had to go to him or he was going to die. And Elsie was so good about it, she was so good, she just —" She stopped. "She just made herself small."

She heard herself say it. I saw it happen. She looked down at the story again, at her own seven-year-old handwriting, and her hand came up over her mouth, and then she was crying, finally, the way I'd been waiting for, but not the way I'd expected. Not loud. She folded forward in that little plastic chair with her elbows on her knees and her hands over her face and shook without making any sound at all, the way a kid cries when she doesn't want anyone in the next room to hear.

I put my hand on her back. I didn't know if I should. She didn't shake it off. I sat there with my hand on my wife's back in a second-grade classroom with the bulletin boards stripped bare and thought about every phone call I'd made from the engine room. How's everybody doing. Fine. How's Elsie? Elsie's great, Elsie's easy, Elsie never gives me a minute of trouble. And I'd hung up every time feeling good. Feeling relieved. One less thing. I'd been as glad as Carly was to have a kid who didn't need anything, because it let me off the hook too, and I'd been nine hundred miles away and I'd never once asked a second question.

"I should have been here," I said. "I should have seen it."

"You should have," Mrs. Fjelstad agreed. She didn't say it to be cruel. She said it the way she'd tell a kid that seven plus five is twelve. "But you weren't. And now you are. And now you've seen it." She stood up out of the rocking chair, slowly, and smoothed the front of her cardigan. "I'm going to tell you both what I think, and then I'm going to go out and finish my last Field Day. I think you're not bad people. I've met bad people, in thirty-six years. You're not them. I think you're two tired people who decided a long time ago that you had one child who needed everything and one child who needed nothing, and you got so used to it that you stopped checking. And I think Elsie got so used to it that she stopped checking too. She thinks this is what she's worth. Half an egg salad sandwich from her teacher." She picked up the yellowed envelope from the table and put it in Carly's lap, on top of her own story. "And I think if somebody doesn't climb all those stairs pretty soon, she's going to grow up and get married and have children, and one day one of them is going to ask her for a cupcake."

Carly took her hands away from her face. Her eyes were swollen and her mascara had run down in two dark lines. She looked up at Mrs. Fjelstad.

"Why did you keep it?" she said. "Thirty years. Why didn't you just throw it away?"

Mrs. Fjelstad thought about that for a moment. She looked out the window at the field. "Because it was yours," she said. "Because somebody should have given it to you and nobody did. And because I was sorry. I've been sorry for thirty years that I stood at that window and watched you go. I didn't want to stand at that window again." She went to the door. "Take your time. Lock it behind you when you go, would you? Elsie knows where the key goes."

She went out. Through the gap in the door I saw her stop by the bench in the hallway and bend down and say something to Elsie, and Elsie nodded, and Mrs. Fjelstad touched the top of her head, very lightly, the way you'd touch something you were afraid of knocking over, and then she walked away down the hall in her green cardigan and her sensible shoes, and I heard the outside door at the end of the hall open and the sound of the field come in, kids shrieking and the music thumping, and then the door swung shut and it was quiet.
