The corridor smelled of wet iron and old smoke.

Lucen Marrow walked first because someone had to, and because Brynna Solenne's hand on his sleeve would have pulled him back if he had let her take the lead. The arched ceiling gathered the torchlight and threw it down in long, uncertain bars across the floor slabs. Each slab was large enough to make a person feel small by accident. The walls were rough stone, not the dressed kind that lords preferred for dining halls, but the older kind that remembered when keeping things in mattered more than impressing anyone who came to look.

Torch sconces lined the passage at uneven intervals. Some held living flame. Some held only black stubs and the memory of heat. Lucen's dark burgundy doublet caught what light there was along the gold clasps at his chest. The heavy cloak over his shoulders dragged a soft edge of sound against the stone whenever he turned too quickly. At his left hip the sword rode quiet. He had not drawn it since they left the upper court, and he did not intend to draw it for the doors. Doors of this age answered to keys and courage, not steel.

Behind him, Brynna's crimson velvet whispered. The square neckline of her dress sat correct and severe, as if she had dressed for a council rather than a descent. Her strawberry-blonde hair fell in a long wave nearly to her waist, and in the torchlight it looked almost copper, almost soft enough to make a man forget what they had come to do. She did not forget. Her fingers kept finding the seam of his cloak and releasing it, finding it again, as if the cloth itself might change its mind and become a rope back to daylight.

"Lucen," she said, not loudly. Sounds traveled strangely under arches. "Stop."

He stopped.

Ahead of them the corridor widened toward a pair of massive arched wooden doors bound in iron and studded with dark nails the size of a thumb. Beyond those doors, if the steward's map and the marriage articles and Lucen's uncle's carefully unsigned letters were all telling adjacent versions of the truth, waited the thing that could make their alliance law instead of rumor.

Brynna's breath fogged faintly. The air had gone cooler without asking permission.

"What is that?" she asked.

He listened. At first he heard only the torches and the far drip of water somewhere in the masonry. Then, under that, a slow sound like a bellows drawn by something that did not need to hurry. Not quite a snore. Not quite a growl. The sound of a large lung remembering that it still belonged to a living chest.

"We must go," Brynna said. Her voice stayed level, which was worse than panic. Panic could be soothed. Level meant she had already done the math. "Lucen. We turn around. We tell them the corridor was blocked. We find another proof."

He shook his head once. The wavy dark brown hair at his temples was damp with the castle's underground chill. "There is no other proof that counts before the equinox. If we leave these doors shut, your sister stays under House Grell's courtesy, and courtesy is only a prettier word for leverage. If we leave them shut, Vorath stays sealed while my uncle sells the claim as if a living witness were livestock."

"Then let your uncle sell air," she said. "Better air than us walking into a mouth."

"It is not a mouth," Lucen said, and hated how thin the sentence sounded. "It is a witness. Bound. Old. Named in both our houses' earliest ledgers. The articles say the alliance is sealed when the Bound One acknowledges the pair who open the vault. Without that, we are only two people in expensive cloth standing in a hallway."

Brynna looked at the doors as if they might answer for him. The iron studs made a pattern that was almost constellations and almost nothing. "And if what acknowledges us decides acknowledgment looks like teeth?"
