"Compacts end when the need that made them becomes more honest than the fear that kept them," Vorath said. "Yours is not there. Do not rush me toward a freedom you have not earned the right to celebrate. Freedom celebrated early becomes another transfer."

Lucen accepted that. Acceptance felt like swallowing stone, and also like not choking on theater.

On the thirteenth day a courier arrived from Grell with a gift for Brynna: a length of fine grey silk and a note suggesting she might want softer clothes for softer negotiations. Brynna burned the note in the solar brazier and sent the silk to Isera with a second note in her own hand: *Wear this if you want. Or tear it into bandages. Either choice is yours. We are not trading you.*

Lucen watched her seal the package and said, "You are kinder than the season."

"I am precise," Brynna said. "Kindness without precision is how hostages become decorations."

On the fifteenth day Lucen's wound reopened during sword drill—not from vanity, from rust in his timing—and the arms master cursed him for a fool. Brynna heard the cursing from the gallery, came down, and did not offer tenderness in public. She offered a clean cloth and a schedule change. Later, in private, she pressed her forehead briefly to his uninjured shoulder and said, "If you die practicing readiness, I will be furious in ways the log cannot hold."

"Then I will practice without dying," Lucen said.

"See that you do."

On the seventeenth day the Talren woman—her name was Osera Talren, ink forever at her cuticles—requested a private hour with both of them and Vorath. In the chamber she read back their own decision log in a dry voice, then looked up.

"You are doing better than most houses do when a myth becomes a neighbor," Osera said. "Do not become addicted to the moral high ground. High ground is where people stand to look tall while someone else does the ditch work. Keep doing ditch work."

Vorath's rumble might have been laughter. "Listen to the ink woman."

They listened.

On the nineteenth evening, before Morthen's solo return, Brynna and Lucen walked the corridor slowly on purpose, reenacting without speech the first dread walk. She stopped at the same place she had stopped before. She did not ask to go. She placed her palm on the stone and said, "I am still afraid of what we woke. Fear is not an exit pass. It is a fact we carry."

Lucen placed his palm beside hers. "I am still afraid of becoming the man who shakes his head instead of explaining. Explanation is not an exit pass either. It is the work."

They went in together and told Vorath both fears without converting them into blame. The dragon listened, then said, "Fear named is usable. Fear hidden becomes flail-oil. Come back tomorrow with meat and fewer metaphors."
