"I'm only telling you what I know," she said.Richard glanced toward Daniel as though inviting him into the joke. Daniel did not smile. Neither did Grace. Richard seemed not to notice."I specifically requested someone qualified for this table," he said. "This is an international business dinner, not a neighborhood cafe."Maya's fingers tightened slightly around the red notebook. "Mr. Reed assigned me to your table.""I don't care who assigned you."Several people nearby were openly listening now. Maya could feel it without looking—that particular stillness had settled over the room, the uncomfortable silence people created when they witnessed something wrong, but had not yet decided whether it was wrong enough to interrupt their evening.Richard turned toward Laura. "Unbelievable."Laura lowered her eyes. Maya noticed. She noticed everything."Would you like another server, Mr. Hale?""I'd like somebody who understands why this dinner matters.""I understand."Richard gave a short laugh. "No, you don't."Rain tapped harder against the windows. A server crossed behind Maya carrying a tray of champagne flutes. Somewhere near the kitchen, silverware dropped into a bus tub with a sharp metallic crash.Richard reached into his jacket. For half a second, Maya thought he was taking out his phone. Instead, he pulled out a $20 bill. He folded it once between two fingers. Then, he let it fall. The bill fluttered past Maya's apron and landed beside her shoe. The room seemed to shrink around it."Pick that up," Richard said. "Find somebody qualified, and consider it your tip."Maya looked down. $20. Green paper against dark polished wood. She could hear her own breathing. She could also feel dozens of eyes. Nobody spoke. Daniel's expression hardened. Grace stopped touching her water glass. Laura stared at the bill on the floor. At a table near the window, an older man slowly lowered his fork. A woman beside him looked toward the bar, perhaps hoping someone in authority had seen what happened. Nobody came.Maya thought about bending down—not because Richard had ordered her to, but because leaving money on a restaurant floor felt absurd, because she was working, because she had spent years learning how to survive moments like this without allowing somebody else's ugliness to become her own. Then Richard spoke again. "What are you waiting for?"Maya raised her eyes. "I'm deciding whether you dropped it by accident."A faint sound moved through the nearest tables. Not laughter, exactly—more like a room remembering how to breathe.Richard's face tightened. "You know exactly what I did.""Then it can stay there."Laura turned toward her husband. "Richard."
