Thomas looked at him. "And none of it bought the right to humiliate my staff."The nearby tables went silent again. This time, the silence felt different: earlier it had protected Richard; now it was watching him.Maya finally looked at Thomas. There was gratitude in her eyes, and something else: pain, because he had arrived late. Thomas saw that, too; he would carry it.Richard looked around at Daniel, at Grace, at Thomas, at Laura. Not one face was giving him what he expected: agreement, permission, an easy way out.He turned back to Maya. "This entire thing has been blown out of proportion."Maya's voice stayed calm. "You made it public."Richard's face flushed. "I challenged you. You proved your point.""No."Daniel spoke. Richard turned toward him. Daniel folded his hands on the table. "She proved your assumption was wrong."Grace added, "The documents created the larger problem."Richard looked at her. "Don't do this."Grace's expression did not change. "Do what? Turn a translation issue into a referendum on my company?"Grace slid the tablet toward him. "You did that when you asked us to rely on these materials."Richard pushed it back. "We can fix them."Daniel nodded. "Maybe."Richard blinked. "Maybe?""We don't know yet."Richard's breathing changed. "Daniel..."Daniel looked at him. For most of the night, Richard had controlled the conversation by speaking first, speaking longest, and refusing to let silence belong to anyone else. Now, Daniel let the silence stretch. Then he said, "We are no longer evaluating her qualifications." He glanced at Maya, then back at Richard. "We are evaluating yours."Nothing in the room moved.Laura Hale's face changed: not dramatically, but something behind her eyes settled. All evening, she had watched her husband speak over Maya, dismiss Grace, wave away Daniel's concerns, and use money as if it gave him the right to define everybody else's value. Now, for the first time, Richard looked toward Laura as though expecting support. She looked back at him and did not give it.Grace gathered the documents into one folder. "I want the complete relocation file delivered to our office by 9:00 tomorrow morning."Richard shook his head. "That's unreasonable.""No," Grace said. "$120 million without document consistency would be unreasonable."Daniel added, "No summaries, no selected pages. Everything."Richard looked at Michael Foster's empty place that had never been filled that evening. For the first time, Maya saw what fear looked like on a man who had spent the night making other people feel small.Richard stood. "I need to make a call."Daniel remained seated. "So do I."
