Julian switched off the recording. The sound mattered; what came next did not need to be filmed. He crouched a few feet away, careful not to crowd them. “Zoey, listen to me,” he said. “You never have to say something untrue to keep someone you love. Amara is not being sent away today. You are both staying here with me.”
Zoey studied him, uncertain. “Even if I said the wrong words?”
“Even then.”
“Are you mad at me?”
His face crumpled, and for a second he could not speak. “No, baby. I am sorry you ever thought you had to ask me that.”
Amara still had not looked at him. He turned toward her. “I owe you an apology too. You told me something was wrong. More than once. I made it harder for you to tell me again.”
She touched the bracelet around her wrist. “I thought you liked her more because she knew how to say things right.”
“I believed the person who sounded certain,” he said. “I should have believed you deserved to be heard. I can't change what I did, but I can change what happens now.”
Vanessa took a step forward. “Julian, you're making a permanent decision in front of children who don't understand the consequences.”
“No,” he answered. “I am making one immediate decision. There will be no more recordings of the girls, no more pressure on Zoey, and no school transfer. The other decisions can wait until the children feel safe.”
“Are you ordering me out of my own house?”
“This is their home,” Julian said. “It was their home before you moved into it. I'm asking you to stay somewhere else tonight while we work out what comes next.”
Vanessa looked as though she might refuse. Her lips moved, but Daniel quietly offered to help arrange a hotel or contact a family member. There would be no public spectacle, no theatrical police arrival, and no argument that forced the girls to watch adults decide who had won. Vanessa collected her purse and left through the front door with her shoulders straight. Julian did not mistake her silence for agreement.
Only when the door closed did Zoey begin to sob in earnest. She buried her face in Amara's dress and cried as though she had been holding the tears back for weeks. Julian sat on the carpet beside them. He did not ask for a detailed account that afternoon. He did not ask either child to explain exactly what Vanessa had done. He simply stayed, and when Zoey reached for his hand, he held it.
