“Sweetheart, remember what we practiced. Your father needs to understand that changes are necessary. If you keep confusing him, this becomes harder for everyone.”

Zoey looked toward the doorway. “Will he be mad at Amara?”

“He will do what a responsible father must do.”

“Can I stay with her?”

“That depends on whether you help us make a better home.”

Zoey's lower lip trembled. “But Amara is my home.”

For a moment Vanessa looked startled by the answer. Amara lifted her eyes, and the sisters met each other's gaze across the carpet. Neither was smiling. Still, the younger girl's simple statement reached the older one like a hand held out in darkness.

Vanessa straightened. “We are not doing this again. Say the sentence, Zoey.”

The little girl began to cry. She tried to repeat the words, but they broke apart in her mouth. “If I say what you want, can Amara still sleep here tonight?”

Julian had reached the house minutes earlier. He and Daniel had entered through the side door, planning to speak with Vanessa privately. But from the hallway he heard the strange, rehearsed phrases coming from the living room. Daniel stopped him before he rushed in. Julian raised his phone and began recording what he could hear and see from the doorway, more to preserve the moment accurately than because he understood what he was about to witness.

He saw Amara standing with her shoulders drawn inward. He saw Zoey shaking in a dress that matched her sister's. He saw Vanessa lean toward the younger girl, not to comfort her but to insist that she produce the right words. The polished family portrait, Julian realized, had been arranged around a child's fear.

Then he stepped into view.

“Vanessa,” he said, “tell me why my daughter thinks she has to lie to keep her sister in this house.”

Vanessa turned so quickly that one of her earrings caught in a loose braid. Her gaze moved from Julian to his phone and then to Daniel behind him. She recovered her expression with astonishing speed.

“Julian, thank goodness. Zoey is upset. We were trying to help her describe what's been happening, and Amara has made the situation difficult again.”

“Don't talk about me like I'm not here,” Amara said, her voice scarcely louder than a breath.
